I REMEMBER the “But- lin’s sailors” in the con crete warship HMS Royal Arthur, which never actually put to sea! The comrades’ associa
tion is now run from my home in Well Terrace. “Our true intent is all
for your delight,” read the Billy Butlin message over the main entrance gate at his Skegness Holiday Camp. They were bold and confident words, intended to reassure the timid and calm the apprehensive; words holding a promise of joy and pleasure to come; words designed and tailor-made to be read by a nation at peace with itself and the world. When Billy Butlin had

those words wrought in iron and arched over the camp entrance, he could not possibly have envi saged the wry smiles and hollow laughter they would eventually evoke from the many thousands of young men who would pass beneath them during the dark days of the 1939- 45 conflict. But then Mr Butlin did not design his dream camp as a wartime intake establishment for the Royal Navy and could never have known that, for six years, Butlin’s Holiday Camp, Skegness, would become b e t te r known as HMS Royal Arthur. “Royal Arthur” marked the beginning of some thing else, an awareness of a flag known as the “White Ensign,” the symbol of a proud service. A service with an impressive history of achievement and tradi tion and, with this aware ness, a growing pride in the uniform being worn and representing that service. It was also a time of
newly-forged friendships, an understanding of the word camaraderie. A learning of the ability to
get on with others, but, most important of all, a coming to terms with the need for self-reliance. Les sons learned the hard way and ones which were to become an integral part of one’s life for ever. So, for thousands of
boys, ' “Royal Arthur” marked the start of man hood and for this reason, so long as its dwindling number of “old boys” remain, Skegness will be remembered with great affection. On May 14th, 1990,
Skegness will temorarily become once again “Royal Arthur,” when a reunion of “old boys” is being planned. This will take the form
of several days packed with events designed to gently bring back
memories and evoke nos talgia of days long ago and those ex-officers and men who attend, along with their wives and families, can be sure that the words “Our true intent is all for your delight” will, on this occasion, ring with truth and sincerity.

‘Joe Ross,’ Prince Youssoupoff and a fund of stories to tell!
IN 1945/46, prior to demob, I was working as secre tary for the Air Officer commanding Greece and was in the same office as his personal assistant (sort of aide de camp). This aide in private life was Sir Donald Ross, known to us lower ranks as “Joe Ross,” tak ing his name from the dance band leader of those
times. “Our Joe” was certainly one of the boys and no
tury, the memory grows dim and hazy, but how many of th o se who experienced it can forget that first encounter with wartime naval discipline, discipline which started upon arrival by train at Skegness and a meeting with an ageing petty officer who, in a brusque and bullying manner, d i re c te d t rem b l in g recruits to a Royal Naval truck waiting outside the station? A truck for a ride through those dreaded, word-carrying gates, gates which for many were to become the symbol of a new way of life. The start of this new life
snob. I think he was the most interesting fellow I have ever met — Queen Mary was his godmother, he was a pageboy at King George V’s coronation and
an'expert in antiques. He advised the producers of the film “King Henry
VIII” with Charles Laughton. He knew Laughton very well and I remember him telling me about Laughton being in a stage play when he had to take the part of a wicked Chinaman who ran an opium den. But what about stage make-up? Joe and Charles Laughton went along to the British Museum and found a Chinese vase with a face painted on it, which was just the look wanted for the role. They got an artist to go to the museum and copy
Laurence Hardy, our producer, was also a fan of his. It was Byng who suggested that we should pro duce the musical “CounteSs Maritza” and this we did. Some of our readers might remember this, with Joyce Gregory in the leading role. Mr Byng recalls it in his biography, “As you were,”
and I was more than surprised when reading the book a long time after our production that he should remember us. He says: “The war came along and so the production of ‘Countess Maritza’ ended when the theatres closed at the start of the war . . . but she is still alive . . . I persuaded an amateur society to do her in Clitheroe . . . she was a big success and several other amateurs have played her since.” He also mentions Joe Ross — “a remarkable per

He used to rent ancient cas tles for parties and one of the guests was Prince Youssoupoff, one of the chaps who gave the poisoned cakes to Rasputin, connected with the Russian Czarina. What a guest! He always took a couple of eiderdowns from the beds when he went to have a bath. They must have got very wet and difficult to dry, but that mattered little to a Romanoff. Other frequent guests were Barbara Cartland and her brother Ronald, who was the first MP to be killed at Dunkirk. Joe was also a backer for shows, putting money
