Pat is also one of the
Col. Wingate’s famous special force, “The Chin- dits,” in Burma, he and his comrades were surprised by the Japanese.
“In the darkness, I only had time to throw myself
under a bush and could not get to my rifle,” he said. “One Japanese soldier was so near to me I could hear him breathing and my friend nearby turned to him thinking it was me. He was immediately bayo neted and later died in my arms.”
In another mission, Pat
was one of only five to sur vive from a platoon of 30. But as always, life pro vided a lighter side, too. “I was in charge of a
nasty mule called Molly, used for carrying flame th row e r s and barbed wire,” Pat told me. “In the shelling one night, two mules tied either side of Molly were blown to bits, but my awkward creature escaped without a scratch. I’ll never know how!” The 14th Army, in
which Pat served, was so deep behind enemy lines that news of it seldom fil te re d th ro u g h and it became known as the “Forgotten Army.” However, Pat recalls
