Letters to the lEditor Our ‘doomed’ rail line comes to
rescue yet again
established rail com munication link inesti mably valuable to London/Scottish traf fic, yet which received warnings of its immi nent demise years
ago. A closure notice is
THE navvies who Leeds to Carlisle again. Here we all sit on an

national network? Surely now is the time to demand withdrawl of the closure notice and reintroduction of regular services. Our MP, as Government
suspended rather like the sword of Damocles, await ing the nod from Trans p o r t M in is te r Paul Channon. Now, once again, the “doomed line” is coming to
throughout March, we are to play host to diverted inter-city trains between Preston and Carlisle, due to yet more necessary repairs of the West Coast main line. Needless to say, British
the rescue of British Rail. For every weekend
Chief Whip, should be adding his name to the list of MPs, organisations and councils asking Paul Chan non to ensure BR provides a future for this important route by withdrawing the closure notice. As Lancashire County
Council drags its feet over giving full support to the line — and with elections imminent — I, as a mem ber of the local electorate, would be interested in hearing the thoughts of our prospective councillors on the issue.
(On behalf of Transport 200 0),
MR S. WHITTLE,
13 Central Avenue, Clitheroc.
Refuse dumping an outrage
Rail again fails to make full use of a golden oppor tunity by its refusal to consider making some of the diverted trains avail able for local usage. These diverted trains will num ber several hundred. Are we sure Ribblehead via duct can take the strain without making BR’s case for closure appear even more ludicrous? Incidentally, if our local
line was already closed to BR, then those thousands of souls passing our way would have to travel either via York or by bus along the M6 — at a cost in excess of that required, even at BR’s estimates, to retain the Settle/Carlisle line, not to mention the general inconvenience. When, therefore, will
BR admit it needs the Blackburn-Hellifield-Car-

YOUR front page article describing how Holden Clough has been once more desecrated with lit ter, despite the superb work by the Scouts and Venture Scouts, prompts me to write. The latest outrage was discovered by council work
men who arrived at the ravine to fix “no tipping” notices — these notices are themselves an ugly addi tion to any beauty spot, but sadly necessary. Would it be possible (1) for the notices to have
information concerning the whereabouts and hours of opening of official tip sites which the public are per mitted to use and (2) for your paper also to feature this information? If the people who accumulate such quantities of
rubbish can be informed of how easily it can be legally tipped, they may then dispose properly of unwanted items.
MRS S. E. BIRKIN, “Soay” Bentlea Road, Gisburn.
Apologies due
MAY I, through your paper, take this opportunity to apologise to ramblers and hikers for the condi tion of the footpath from Clithcroe Road, Sab- den, past Wilkin Heys Farm to Whalley. The road is frequently used by walkers, hut at
the moment is virtually impassable. This is due to a farmer from Pendleton using the road with heavy
tractors and machinery, while laying drainage pipes in the field below Wilkin Heys. The recent bad weather has added to the problem. I am sure he will put the road back into good use as soon as possible.
■ MRS CAROL MELLOWS, Wilkin Heys Farm, Sabden.
