He drew benefit while working as taxi driver
A CLITHEROE man claiming to be a medium told magistrates he did not realise he was drawing benefit illegally because his memory had been erased when he had begun receiving ‘messages.’ Tom Garlick (50), of question about whether or Alma Place, denied obtain- not he was working,

that he had signed a form saying he was not working while he was, in fact, employed as a part-time taxi driver. But he said he did not
read the form properly hGeaus£ h(! heran tn nick because a few weeks ear lier he had been to see a chief constable who had asked for his assistance with a case, and unfortun ately his memory had been erased. He also said he had for gotten his glasses that day

because he began to pick up information or ‘mes sages’ in his mind about a death, a heart attack and an assasination, among other things.
He was also worried
that his mind would be erased.

Warning for shopkeepers
IN the wake of several break-ins at Clitheroe town centre shops, the town’s CID has a clear message for shopkeepers: Always lock up carefully and do not put temptation in a thief's way. Said Det. Insp. Ron
G r i f f ith s : “ Now that Christmas is approaching, it is important for people to make sure premises are secure. “Many shops have more
stock than usual at this time of year and thieves are well aware of that, so all possible precautions should be taken.”
Bungalow
AN outline application for the building of a bungalow on land at Rock Mount,' Pimlico Road, Clitheroe, has been granted by the Ribble Valley Council’s D e v e lo p m e n t S u b - committee. Also approved at the
premises was the change of use of the garden area for additional car parking.
Post office
THE change of use of a former doctors’ surgery to a dwelling house with post office and retail shop at 'round level at 97 King street, Whailey, has been
approved by the Ribble Valley Council’s Devel opment Sub-committee.
Garlick said he did not
do wrong intentionally. He did not realise he was working at the time and
'just went into the social security office and signed forms as a routine, with out knowing what he was signing or what he was doing. He added that he would
not cheat his country out of a penny and had spent £20,000 of his own money going away on missions. He had been involved in police work and intelli gence for some time. When asked why he was
wearing a dinner suit in court, Garlick replied that he was going to meet the Queen in order to receive a knighthood, but he had one last mission to com plete before he would accept it Mr Mark W i l l iam s ,
defending, told the magis trates: “To be found guilty of this offence, a defendant must be found to have acted in a dishonest man ner and if my client is tell ing the truth, then that is not the ease. Garlick did not realise
he was doing any wrong and never intended to deceive or act dishonestly. He was receiving ‘mes sages’ and really did not know what he was doing at the time.” Mr Williams asked the
magistrates to consider whether his client was capable o f form in g a dishonest intention, and said that i f not, then he should be acquitted. Garlick was given a con ditional discharge for a
period of two years and was o rd e r e d to pay £131.70 compensation to th e D e p a r tm e n t o f Employment, plus £65 prosecution costs

Interest in life-saver alarms
T H E R E lias been an excellent response to the idea of introducing com munity alarms into the Ribble Valley. Th e R ib b le V a l le y
Council helped to promote the Piper Lifeline II tele phone and trigger alarms with an exhibition at Whailey. Since then, there have
been many inquiries about the Tunstall Telecom sys- tem and m o r e a r e expected with the onset of winter. Twelve systems are cur
rently being delivered, mostly to the Clitheroe area, and Mr David Mor ris, director of community and commercial services for the borough, said he was very encouraged at the interest. The equipment is par
ticularly useful to elderly people living in sheltered accommodation or on their own. In an emergency, a resi
dent is able to make con tact with a control centre by s imply d ia l l in g or pressing an alarm trigger worn on clothing and help can be on its way within seconds. “ In the sort of weather
we have had this week, there is no doubt that these systems are a life- saver,” Mr Morris added.
National parks
RIBBLESDALE Camera Club heard a talk from member Graham Dudley on a 16,000-mile round trip o v e r 30 days, mainly covering national parks in the USA and Canada. In his talk, which was
illustrated with slides, he told of his visit to the park in Denver and the Yellow stone National Park, Salt Lake City, Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley — well-known as the back drop in countless cowboy films. After returning to Den

OAPs’ cash
MEAN thief sneaked nto the Pendle Club,
Lowe rgate , Clitheroe, during Sunday, and stole about £25 cash from a locked contributions box.
EURO MP Mr Michael Hindley took u]3 his role as president of the Old Clitheronians’ Association at the AGM and annual reunion at the Spread Eagle Hotel, Sawley. M r H in d le y , who
attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School from 1956 until 1964, succeeded retiring president Dr Dun can Pickard. T h e e v e n in g was
attended by 154 former students and guests, some having travelled from as far afield as Wiltshire, Hampshire and London. The most senior “old boy” was Mr Albert Veevers, who joined the school in 1914, but the age range spanned the succeeding years right up to the pres ent day. In an a f te r -d in n e r
speech, Mr Hindley, who is Labour Member of the European Parliament for L a n c a s h i r e E a s t , explained some o f the p rob lem s Euro MPs encounter during Parlia mentary debates. Every MP, he said, was entitled to speak in his native lan guage and this had to be tran sla ted into other European languages. Every speaker was allot ted an equal period of time and anyone attempting to speak for longer was cut off in mid-sentence. Dr Pickard also spoke
and a report on the school was given by headmaster Mr Clive Darley. T o p t a b le g u e s t s
included Ribble Valley M a yo r Coun. A lb e r t Atkinson, Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Ian Brown, District Education O f fic e r Mr Peter Evans, chairman of the school g o v e rn o rs Canon John Hudson and chairman of the foundation governors Mr Jim Parker. During the evening,
£235 was raised for Chil dren in Need with a draw for a bottle of whisky don ated by the hotel. At the AGM preceding
the dinner, Mr Geoffrey Isherwood was appointed chairman, Mr Keith Whi teside secretary and Mr Mark Dawson treasurer.
All correct
THE zigzag yellow lines ou ts id e W h a i le y CE School were discussed by Whailey and Little Mitton Parish Council, which heard that the markings were correct and to the suggested requirements.
Notice board
A QUOTE of £80 to repair Whalley’s public notice board was accepted by Whailey and Little Mitton Parish Council at its November meeting.
Fined £1,450 for fighting
FINES totalling £1,450 have been imposed on youths involved in fighting in Clitheroe town centre.
Six defendants were
fined following the three- day case heard by magis
trates at Clitheroe last month. The court asked for social inquiry reports on the other six because they were considering cus todial sentences.
When they appeared,
Carl Joseph Duffy (21), of Henthorn Road, Clith eroe, was given a three- month prison sentence to run concurrently with the one he is already serving.
Gary Peter Duffy (21),
also of Henthorn Road, was given a three-month p r i s o n s e n t e n c e , suspended for two years, and fined £200 with £45 costs.
Stafford Linford (19), of
Kenilworth Drive, Clith eroe, was fined £450 with £150 costs; Howard Lin ford (2 1 ) , o f S e ed a l l Avenue, Clitheroe, was fined £400 with £45 costs; Darren White (20), of Riverside, Low Moor, was
fined £150 with £150 costs and Justin Frazer Coe (18), of Arnold Close, Ribbleton, was fined £250 with £150 costs. Mrs Sara Walker, pro
secuting, told the court that trouble started on the evening of June 26th, after 15 youths from Nelson had come to Clitheroe town centre pubs.
They began to taunt the
Clitheroe group, shouting football slogans, and fight ing broke out.
Three police officers
managed to keep a 50- strong mob apart for more than 10 minutes, but even tually Clitheroe youths charged the smaller group from the Nelson area.
The chairman o f the
bench, Mr Geoffrey Mit chel l , said the f ines reflected public concern, although the magistrates had taken into considera tion the background, ages and circumstances of each defendant.
Naturalists enjoy film shows
CLITHEROE Naturalists were entertained by two films, “ The M65” and “Craven churches,” made by Accrington Cine Club and produced by Mr Hugh Woods. The development of the
m o t o r w a y nor t h o f Accrington showed the care taken in 1984 in res to r in g the footpaths canals and railway sys terns which preceded the motorway. The historical and amen
ity value of local churches at Waddington, Broughton and Slaidburn also showed how well-considered build ing p ro je c ts w e re an important part o f the fabric o f today’s living countryside. Mr D. Topsfield thanked
Mr Woods. The date for the Christ
mas dinner at Whailey Abbey has been brought forward to December 12th.
Twinning events
TH E French Circle of Ribblesdaie heard from Gene Pope about the suc cessful twinning ceremony at W h ai le y A b b e y in August and the return party at Vihiers, which had been filmed by David Butterworth. Mrs Pope had been an
important link at each event, performing the role
of interpreter between the French party and the local group. Both events had been celebrated with good food and conviviality. The Christmas dinner at
the Three Fishes Hotel, Mitton, will be held on December 12th.
Deterred
THE possibility o f bad weather at Whalley.’s Dickensian evening next month has deterred the parish council from run ning a tombola at the event. A different method of
raising money is to be found, after Coun. Eric Ronnan pointed out that a tombola could raise £100 or nothing at all, depend ing on the weather.
Conversion
THE conversion of a barn to a dwelling on Old Back
Lane, Wiswell, has been approved by the Ribble Valley Council’s Devel opment Sub-committee.
