EDISh ORD County Primary School was a hive of activity on Saturday, when pupils, parents and staff thronged the playground for the annual summer fete.

It was opened by Edisford School queen Davina Ingham (11) and her atten

dants and raised £550 for school funds. The Police and Fire Brigade were present to give demonstrations and there

were donkey rides, wet sponges, a teddy bears’ picnic, a bouncing turtle and a tombola. Stalls offered crafts, toys, hooks, bric-a-brac and plenty more. The afternoon, organised by the Parent-Teacher Association, also included

a draw which contributed £100 to the final total. Pictured guessing the weight of a cair arc, from the left: Shaun Roberts

SOUNDS OF THE PAST ARE ‘CAUGHT IN TIME’

MEMORIES and sounds that reflect the true heart of North West England have been captured for ever, immortalised by the No r th West Sound Archive based right here in Clitheroe. “Caught in Time” is a

unique compact disc pain stakingly compiled by the archive’s two masters of the art o f sound, Ken Howarth and Andrew Schofield. It features reminis

cences, dialect, sounds and music which evoke the very essence of life in our region — in the past, an all-too-transient part of our roots, but now pres- e r v e d f o r f u t u r e

by Rachael Collinson

generations. Said Mr Howarth: “The

CD represents a wide cross-section of the North West’s heritage, from Jodrell Bank to the Bacup Coconut Dancers! Local recordings include Clith eroe Morri s Men and youngsters from Wadding- ton and West Bradford School singing traditional children’s play songs.” The 6Gmin. disc means

far more to the archive than just another rec ording. “This is the very hallmark of our work, and we have both virtually sweated blood over it — it

was a concerted effort and we’ve put a tremendous amount of work in,” said Mr Howarth.

The original inspiration

for the disc came from Mr David Wilson, himself a Ribble Valley resident and sales manager for Philips and Du Pont Opt i cal (U.K.) Ltd, of Blackburn. Under a sponsorship deal, the firm pays for the discs to be produced at their large Blackburn plant.

The archivists started

out with original record ings, which they trans ferred on to a digital sys

together in the first place was not at all smooth going, as Mr Howarth vividly recalled: “Andrew and I had to make numerous trips, including one to Jodrell Bank, but the most memorable was the Ministry of Defence tank range in Cumbria. We went there to capture s ome s ound e ff e c t s because we had a sequence of memories of the First World War, but the qual ity wasn’t good enough for

objects of the 1980s buried in a time capsule at Black burn College by Prince Charles during his recent visit to the town. Said Mr Howarth: “To have its importance underlined in such a way was marvellous — it really is a very excit ing advance.”

The disc is now on sale

in local shops and at the archive, and all proceeds wi l l go t owards the archive’s work in preser ving the oral cultures of the region. Mr Howarth is con

vinced that the disc .will cause more than a ripple

or two on an international level, commenting: “Dave Wilson has been giving copies away to buyers — I know that six have gone to Sweden. It will go all over tile world and really put Clitheroe on the map. The technology we have used is absolutely up to the minute. “ It is an exciting project

to be involved in and we are hoping that other sound archives throughout the country will pick up on the idea. Maybe even the National Sound Archive will follow our example — a case of ‘what the North does today, the South will do tomorrow. ’ “The disc is also impor

tant in terms of tourism — it is the sort of thing many people, especially the Americans, will like very much.” In true Northern style,

the CD cover bears the familiar matchstick figures and smoking factory chim neys of a Lowry painting. Said Mr Howarth: “The rights of use were given free by Salford. Others did the same with recordings we used —a lot of the r i g h t s w e r e s im p l y waived. People saw it as their contibution to the area’s heritage, and that is a very good thing.” And so, though the

sights and smells of yes teryear are gone for ever, the sounds will live on — thanks to the archive nest ling at the foot of Clith- eroe’s ancient castle.
