ONE afternoon in November found me lying


spawning ground, cutting the redds in the shallow water runing over the gravel. In faet, the water was so shallow that some of the larger fish had their tails and dorsal fins well out of the water. I've been coming to this spot for ninny years now


and it never fails to excite me, especially when you consider all the dangers that the salmon have to endure to reach the spawning grounds. While I lay there, watching the cock fish protecting its redd from any others that may trespass near its chosen mate, I began to reflect on Inst season’s fishing. On the Ribble and Hodder over the last few years,


the sea-trout runs have certainly improved and some good catches have been reported on both rivers, among them fish up to Dibs being taken on fly. The best sea-trout ever taken from the Ribblc, as


far as I know, weighed in at Kilhs hack in 1981. The scale readings of this fish, verified by the Fresh­ water Fishery Laboratory at Faskally, revealed that it was six years old and it was returning to spawn for the fourth time, when it fell to a spinner.
