Discrimination over waste tipping site
THE Ribble Valley Council is this week await ing a reply to claims by some of its councillors that it is being discriminated against with
regard to waste tipping A sub-committee of the
County Council’s High ways and Transportation Committee met in private to discuss the implications on the Ribble Valley of the closure of a waste disposal
site in Preston. A report to the sub
committee stated the Rib ble Valley’s concern that the move would increase its waste disposal costs and create serious opera tional problems at IBank Holidays.
The borough felt that
waste from Longridge should continue to be
taken to Preston, instead of Clitheroe, while new site options in Preston were considered.
The report added that
Ribble Valley councillors felt the district was under provided for in the alloca tion of tips, with six being closed since 1974 locally without being replaced.
Councillors felt the bor
ough was being discrimin ated against and are now waiting to hear of com pensation offers from the county and its reaction to suggestions for alternative tipping an-angements.
MAKING a splash at Ribblesdale Pool on Saturday were teenagers taking-part in the North West Area Pony Club 'Tctrathlon competition, hosted again this year by Pendle Forest and Cra
ven Hunt Pony Club. The shooting, riding
and running phases were held at Stainlon Cotes, near Gargrave. The local branch won
the l)oys’ competition and came second to the West Lancs County team in the girls’ competition. Nicholas Bower, of
Barnoldswick, was the individual associate win ner in the hoys’ section,
justifying his selection as England boys’ captain. L o c a l g ir l Rache
Walters, of Manor House Farm, Howgill, Riming- ton — also an England team member — was the individual associate win ner in the girls' section and Velda Mason, o f
Slaidbnrn, came fifth.

hospitals’ twilight years. “ I ’ve got to ensure that until the very last day we have the right staff, with the desired experience and in the numbers we need.
Re-deploying staff is
another aspect o f Mr Abbott’s demanding job at
the helm. No less than 95% of staff
live within 15 miles of their work places and the hospitals spend 80% of each year’s budget on labour — a figure in the r e g io n o f £17m. p e r annum.
Mr Abbott is aware of
the social and economic effect the hospitals’ even tual closure could have on the area, so helping staff to find suitable and satis fying alternative employ- m e n t is o f p r im e importance. Right now a national

establish which hospital should close first. Mr Abbott hopes that
when all the various reports are completed he
will be able to say, in Jan uary, which hospital is to
close first. “Then we will start on the contraction plan and everyone will know where they stand,”
he said. Of the task ahead, Mr
Abbott and his staff are not looking at it in a nega tive way, but are deter mined to safeguard the welfare of residents and employees alike. “ We don’ t want low
morale. We don't underes timate the difficulties of contraction. I f a hospital closes in six years, about 1,000 staff will need re employment. We need to look at and identify prior ity areas for relocating staff and, with co-opera tion, try to not make it traumatic.”
