Charity steps in with

rescue plan

A MYSTERY charity has stepped in to help Rowland Mountain Rescue Team to maintain

and the charity are at a delicate stage, but an announcement is expected within three weeks. The charity, which does

its centre at Dunsop Bridge, Talks between the team was way above what they

could afford, raising fears that the rescuers might h a v e to q u i t th e ir headquarters. Despite the talks they

not want to release its name, is interested in buy ing all four cottages pres ently owned by the North West Water Authority as a lo n g te rm c a p i ta l investment. The rescue team hopes _____

to be able to go on renting hotel, its present cottage from the charity at a pepper corn rent and also two other cottages which have been knocked into one.

This would be used as extra accommodation. The end c o t ta g e is

rented by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which is being given an alternative site by the NWWA. The char ity is considering using this as a holiday home. Mr Peter Taylor, team

leader for Bowland, said the charity’s move could be a satisfactory solution t'o the problem. “It will mean we can

stay right in the centre of the hills where we need to be and will give us enough space to expand our train ing facilities.” The NWWA wants to

sell off the cottages and give the rescuers first option to buy, but their asking price of £85,000

have started fund-raising in case negotiations fail and they are forced to buy. They hope to raise at

Naturalists’ in the Dales

THE sun shone brightly for Clitheroe Naturalists’ walk in the Yorkshire D a le s led by Mr G. Wilkinson. Leaving Dent viaduct,

the party walked a section of the Dalesway, most of it on the banks of the River Dee. A keen-eyed junior

member spotted 18 species of birds and among the abundance of wild flowers were wood cranesbill shining cranesbill and sweet cicely. ’The splendid views were appreciated and members had time to see the attractive village of Dent at the end of their

journey. ’Thanks were expressed

to the leader by Mr B. Shaw. The next walk is on June 6th.

PENPALS PAY A VISIT

IT WAS a case of renewing old memories and cementing new friendships when Clitheroe s Pendle County Primary School received a very

special visit. Ransacked

POLICE believe that! thieves who ransacked the main office at Clitheroe Auction Mart may have entered through a broken window. Ten marker pens, £29 in

cash and £20 from a pay phone were taken. It is believed the same

thieves were responsible for breaking into stall 35 on Clitheroe Market, forc ing a rear door and steal ing a box of crisps and £20 in cash.

THE Scanner Appeal has been given a bumper boost, thanks to the efforts of Hodder Valley residents. In our picture, Mr Edward Finder (right), chair

man of the Whit Monday Festival, is pictured with Mr John King-Wilkinson, who, on behalf of the scanner committee, presented a gold award for the

area raising £500. Over the weekend, another £700 was raised when .

all the village organisations held stalls. There has been tremendous support in the Hodder

Valley for the appeal and various other efforts are planned.

The next event is an afternoon tea in Dunsop Bridge Village Hall on June 7th.

. Sabden man Mr David

Aspden, who is recovering from a minor operation, raised £86 from a spon sored run. Plans for a musical

evening at Whalley Meth odist Church had to be ch an g ed at th e la s t moment . . . after the organ motor burnt out. The concert was trans ferred to Whalley Parish Church, and about £65 was raised for the appeal. Among forthcoming

events is a grand midsum mer ball and buffet to be held in the Marquee at the Inn at Whitewell on June 27th. The e v en in g is to

include dancing to music by Johnny Pearson and

over the

“Magic with a Sparkle” from Shaun McCree, who

will visit tables with “close up magic.”

Frank Barnes, of Ethos

Gallery, will be auctioning his “number one” picture of Clitheroe which he com pleted recently.

There will also be a raf fle and a very attractive

buffet. It is hoped that as well

'

as being a memorable social occasion the Scanner Appeal will be given a large financial boost. Local industry is helping by sponsoring the evening. Tickets, price £17.50

each, are available from Mrs A. Wilbourn (Clith eroe 27786), Mr I. Lloyd (Clitheroe 27331) or the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times Office (Clitheroe 22323).

Club boosts the appeal

FOOT stomping music and good food helped to swell the Scanner Appeal by £145 on Saturday night when members of Low Moor Club, Clitheroe

held a barbecue. Music was provided by a five-piece band, the

Eidelburgers, and the proceeds included a collec tion and draw.

Saturday’s event brings the total raised by the . , .

club for the appeal to £420. The committee and staff expressed their thanks to all who had contri buted to the evening’s success.

Cine Club. He demonstrated the

equipment used in film making and rounded off his talk with a “Day trip to Blackpool,” a film made during the 1960s. The club’s summer pro

gramme starts on Tuesday with a photographic quiz, compiled by member Charles Walmsley.

For the visitors were

teacher Mrs Joan Barton, herself a fonner pupil, and 54 children from her Liverpool school, who have been penpals with Pendle youngsters since September.

Mrs Barton, formerly

Miss Parkinson, grew up in Clitheroe and, now a teacher at Rice Lane County Primary School, decided she would like to “get back to her roots.” So the correspondence link was set up between two classes at each school and, with the help of Clitheroe teacher Mrs Liz Wadding- t o n , t h e t r i p wa s arranged.

Face to face for the first

time, the eight and nine- year-olds got on extremely well. They spent a hectic morning playing rounders and other sports and join ing in singing gsmes, then teachers bravely ventured through the town with the ioo-plus group, up to the Castle for a fun picnic. After playing in the

park, the Liverpool chil dren waved goodbye to their new pals and were taken to Shuttleworth Farm, Henthorn, for the afternoon — for some, their first visit to a real farm. About 80 Pendle young

sters are to make a recip rocal visit in June, spend ing a morning at the Liverpool school and an afternoon at the Maritime Museum.

Former

bandsman dies

A KEEN member of the former Clitheroe Brass Band, Mr Fredrick Down ing, has died aged 80. Mr Downing, of Lilac

Grove, Clitheroe, was a trombone and euphonium player who performed at many leading event s locally. Born and bred in Clith

eroe, he stayed in Ribble Valley all his life and worked as a driver for the former Ribble Cement. He leaves a wife and

daughter. The service and crema

tion is at Accrington on Monday.
