Minilink service changes
CHANGES were intro duced by Ribble this week to their Clitheroe Minilink
services. As reported last week,
services Cl and C2 have been revised to provide a 20-minute service to Low Moor.
The former has been re
routed in the Peel Park area and will serve Woone Lane and West View. The route and timetable on service C2 is revised to operate from Clitheroe and Grindleton via Chat burn and will operate every 20 minutes past the h o u r M o n d a y s to Saturdays. Service C3 is withdrawn
between Chatburn and Clithroe via Pimlico Road, but has been replaced by Blackburn Transport’s C3 service. Some 225 journeys to
and from Chatburn have been extended and several F r id a y and Saturday evening journeys have been introduced on the 227 N e ls o n and B u rn le y services.
MEMBERS of Clitheroe Parish Church Organ Society held a successful coffee morning on
■ Saturday. T h e M a y o r an d
Mayoress o f the Ribble Valley, Coun. and Mrs Les Nevett, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Clitheroe, Coun. and Mrs James M c G h i e , w e r e in attendance. Several competitions
were held and prizewin ners included Mrs Bond, of Chatburn Road, Clitheroe; Mrs Rushton, of Victoria Street, Clitheroe; and Mr Tom Briggs, who won the treasure hunt. Tlie event was held in
the Common Room of the United Reformed Church, Clitheroe, by permission of the Rev. J. Salsbury. Pictured are some of the
organisers with Coun. and Mrs McGhie and Mrs Rowena Myers (centre),
wife of Clitheroe Parish Church o rg a n is t Mr Charles Myers.
Retired
solicitor A S O L IC IT O R who moved to Waddington after retirement, Mr Fred Peter Jackson, has died, aged 73. Mr Jackson, o f The
Chestnuts, Edisford Road, was born in Accrington and began work with solic itors Rowland and Co. in the town. Later he started his own
firm, Jackson and Co., with offices in Accrington
and Great Harwood. Mr Jackson leaves a
wife, Florence Mary, and sons Andrew, David and Richard. The funeral service is to
be held in St He len’ s Church, Waddington, tomorrow’ , followed by cremation at Accrington.
£40 theft was ‘cry for help’
A MAN who stole £40 at the Commercial Hotel, Cfitheroe, later gave him self up to police, Clitheroe magistrates were told.
Gary Anthony Hayton
(20), of no fixed address, admitted stealing £40 cash, the property of Mr Keith Dale.
Prosecutor Mrs Sara
Walker said that Mr Dale had left the money in a pocket in his jeans. Over night it went missing and police started a search for Hayton, who had also been staying at the hotel.
Soon afterwards, Hay
ton gave himself up to Clitheroe police and apolo gised for all the trouble caused. Mr John Lumley, in
mitigation, said the theft was not the act of a pro fessional, but rather a cry for help from someone who had been suffering domes tic problems. The magistrates agreed
to defer sentence until December 22nd to give Hayton the chance to find permanent accommodation and obtain work.

A C R A ZE that crossed the Atlan tic to Britain has taken on a new dimension for a C l i t h e r o e schoolboy.
Eleven-year-old
Richard A llen, of Meadow View, has
developed his skills on BMX bikes to such a d e g re e that next month he travels to France for the BMX Bike Racing World
Championships. The Kibblesclale School
pupil has been taking part in competitions all over the country and is ranked fourth best for his age group in the North West and 12th in Britain. He travels to Bordeaux
early in August for a four- day test of nis racing abili ties against the best in the
world. Going with him will be
father Barry, the manager o f the Milk Marketing Board in Whalley, and mother Margaret. “ I just bought him a
bike three or four years ago to ride about on and never expected him to take it up so seriously,” said Barry, who is chair man of the Mid-Lancashire BMX Club. “Nowadays he spends a
tremendous amount of time on his bike and is rac ing three or four times a week.” Far from dying out, the

craze of BMX riding is still
going strong since being introduced from America. Last weekend at Crewe, 900 riders aged from four
to 20 years competed in races over a rugged course of straights and jumps. America still dominates the sport but Europe is
-catching up fast and was rewarded by being chosen for tlie first time to stage thi s y e a r ’s w o r l d championships.
