Criticises plans for a poll tax

THE Labour Party’s Prospective Parliamen tary Candidate for the Ribble Valley, Mr Greg Pope, this week hit out at the Conservative Party’s plans to introduce a “community charge” or poll tax, if successful at the next General Election.

Addressing members at

the monthly meeting of Clitheroe Labour Party, Mr Pope claimed that the introduction of such a m e a s u r e w o u ld be iniquitous. It would shift the bur

den from the wealthy to those least able to pay. Many people would there fore be tempted not to register as electors in order to avoid paying and this, he felt, would strike at the very heart of the co u n try ’s democracy, whereby everyone had the right to vote regardless of their financial situation.
