Drink driver banned for three years
A CLITHEROE man was breathalysed by . police during a roaasiae spot cnecn ior a stolen vehicle, Clitneroe magistrates were told.
d d They were stopping all
high-performance cars along Clitheroe Road, Great Mitton, and breath alysed David Mills (31), of Newlands Avenue, after smelling alcohol on his breath. Mills, who had no con
nection with the stolen vehicle, was banned from driving for three years and fined £150 with £14 costs, after pleading guilty to driving a Ford Sierra when the alcohol in his breath exceeded the pre scribed limit. The court heard that
Mills qualified for the maximum disqualification
because he had been banned from driving for 12 months in 1978 for a simi lar offence.

the offence happened as the defendant was driving home from a Ribchester
club. He had intended to return by taxi, but when one was not available “stu pidly took the decision” to drive home. There had been nothing
in the manner of his driv ing that had prompted the police to stop him. His car had been stopped because of the check for the stolen vehicle and nothing else said Mr Dearing.
with farmers at the home of Mr and Mrs Harvey Robinson, of Wood House Gate Farm, Slaidburn. There he again ans

An honour to be linked with Grammar School
I AM most happy to report that the Clitheroe Royal Grammar School stu dents and supervising staff have success fully invaded north east Iowa, and left behind only pleasant experiences for our
school, hosting families and community! The Ribble Valley area should be very proud
of these fine representatives of their school, Lancashire and England. It is an honour for us to be linked to Clitheroc Royal Grammar School and your community and we have com menced planning future exchanges. We know the parents are rightfully proud of their exchange students and the board of gover
no r s can be proud of the supervision and spon sorship by Michael and Val Fielding and Eddie and Chris Murphy. Also, a final thank you to Clive Darley, headmaster, is in order. It is hoped that our unusually early and
delightful spring in Iowa did not totally steal . . one day in England, for it’s spring in
England now!”

win for James
CHAIGLEY rider James Whittle scored a memora ble victory with his first win at Gisburn Races on Saturday. James (21), of Hodder
View, Higher Hodder, riding 11-year-old Camp Hill, seized the initiative in an incident-packed race. He had previously com pleted five other courses on Camp Hill and won by two lengths. The favouri te, Bra-
binger Boy, owned by Mr Trevor Laxton, of Wad dington, seemed to find the ground too hard and could only manage second place. J ame s , a s t ude nt ,
received the Hunt Cup and on Saturday will enter his first point-to-point at Aintree. Despite the miserable
weather, thousands of people from all over the North turned up for the races, organised by Pendle Forest and Craven Hunt at Westby Hall Farm.
