Eric Whalley made an approach for Holden List week, promis ing him first team football, to replace Dave Mottershead, who has had to leave the club through work commitments. It was hoped Holden would

eventually be Denis Under wood's possible successor and, in the meantime, provide excel lent cover. But the opportunity offered by Accrington is not one to be missed and managers

PROSPECTS GOOD

Blackburn RUFC iths IS. Clitheroe RUFC 2nd XV 6

PLAYING in terrible condi tions, Clitheroe kicked off with the wind advantage in the first half. Although an inexjmrienced side, they snowed great pros

pects for the future. The Clitheroe pack out-

scrummaged and out-mauled Blackburn and most of the first half was played around the Blackburn 22m. area. Clitheroe had a try disal

lowed but the continued pressure put on the Blackburn pack forced them into errors, giving {mnalties away. Tak ing full advantage.

Clitheroe scrum-half K. Moore converted two of them, giving them a 6-0 half-time lead. In the second half. Blackburn

scored a quick try, which was unconverted. This gave the home team inspiration and their more experienced three- quarters continually kicked, using the wind advantage. Defensive errors let Black

burn in for a further three late tries, of which they converted

Henthorn hang/ on for a

narrow victory

Henthorn Utd 5, Highfield Boys I

IT took Henthorn a long time to settle in this Hyndbum and District League under*14 match at Littlemoor. Without regulars Smith.

Kearsley and Lewis, they had to rearrange the team and it was left to Czapowski to battle

alone up front. Although under constant

pressure early on, strong de fensive play by Stokes and Sayle kept Henthorn in the game. Two goals by Czapowski

and one bv Stokes gave Henth orn a 3*0 lead and, when Czapowski scored a fourth goal early in the second half, every one’ expected Highfield to col

lapse. But Highfield had different

ideas and pulled two back. They added a third when a

sloppv back-pass by Allan left the Henthorn keeper stranded. Stokes scored nis second to

make it 5-3, but then Highfield fought back and only strong defensive play by Sayle and some brave goalkeeping by Barnes kept Henthorn in the game. Man of the match was

Stokes.

Oswaldtwistle 1mm 3, Trinity YC 4

TRINITY turned in their best performance of the season to win this Hyndbum and District Leagtie match. Level at the interval, the

home team scored two goals within 10 minutes of the restart

to lead 3-1. Trinity fought back and

levelled the scores again through Briggs and Edmond son. With five minutes remain ing, Edmondson, who deser vedly won the man-of-the- match award, cut in and volley ed home from the edge of the area to complete his hat-trick and seal victory.
