warning
A WARNING has come from Clitheroe CID chief Det. Sgt. Jim Oldcorn to elderly people to demand official identification from callers, following the theft of £85 from a woman in the town. Two men claimed they
were council employees when they visited one of the Beech Close sheltered bungalows at Henthorn. One of the men, aged
30 to 40 spoke in broken English and was possibly Italian. He was 5ft. 9in. to 5ft. lOin. tall, of slim build, with short straight dark hair and was wear ing a dark suit. The other was younger
and stocky build. He had close curly black hair. Det. Sgt. Oldcorn said
that anyone receiving a visit from so-called council officials should demand identification, check with the council offices or ring Clitheroe police.
Clitheroe Auction Mart
AT Clitheroe Auction Mart’s Tuesday sale, 21 dairy animals and 138 calves were forward, and in the dairy section, newly- calved heifers made to £680. In the calf section, Friesian
bulls made to £124, heifers to £S4, Hereford bulls to £138 and
heifers to £74. Charolais bulls made to £148, heifers to £108, Limousin bulls to £164 and heif ers to £106. At Monday’s prime finished
stock sale, there were 124 cattle and 1,247 sheep forward. The entry of cattle was strong number wise, but top quality was scarce, although trade was
sharp for most stock. Calf bulls peaked at 123p
with a Limousin from W. P. Brewer and Sons, and at 121.Sp with a Charolais from R. Yates. Herefords went to 115.2p from R. Seed and Son and rriesians to 115.6p from E. and M. Pinder. In the graded section, light steers made to 101.8p with a Welsh Black from T. W. Par kinson, who also claimed top medium steer

B. Walker’s Limousin heading the medium weights at 103.2p. The overall average was 93.8p, Monday’s national average being 96.96p. ' Cows again found a good
market, with heavies making to 79.2p, from P. Shorrock, and medium weights to 82.6p, from R. Yates. Numbers forward in the
lamb section were slightly down, but prices were up by some 7p per kilo overall. Light lambs made to 182p, standard to 186p and medium to 173.5p, quality iambs attracting a noticeable premium. The overall average of
166.48p was almost exactly the same as Monday’s national average. Light steers made to 101.8p
(average 95.58p), medium to lOOp (95.16p), light heifers to 100.4p (92.38p), medium to
103.2p (93.9p) and heavy to 90p. The overall average was 93.8p.
Ungraded animals made to

showing very little change in trend but store cattle finding a more varied trade. August calving cows made to

owner of the Brick House Restaurant, says that the 180 six-foot high Leylandii conifers were left hacked in half, still tied to their supporting stakes. Police are investigating
the damage, but Mr Gor nall believes that it could be a protest by a local person against plans he has recently submitted to Ribble Valley Council to build an indoor bowling green. The trees were put up
to screen houses along Longridge Road and are among 1,000 planted in the grounds. On receipt of the plans
for a building to house indoor bowling, Mr Gor nall says that Ribble' Valley Council’s planning department sent letters to residents in the houses along Longridge Road asking if they had any objections. “The site is a quarter of
a mile away from there/' says Mr Gornall who added that there seemed to have been misunder standing about its loca tion. “ Someone must have
seen or heard something,” says Mr Gornall. “Dogs are kept at the
back of those houses and they must have started barking. I just hope the police come up with the
culprit.’’__________
Bus travel made
easier RESTRICTIONS which have operated for half a century on Ribble bus services were lifted this week. For the first time
more than 50 years Ribble passengers will be able to get on and off buses at Blackburn Transport stops. In the past, once the
Clitheroe buses reached Wipshire on the way to Blackburn they could not stop to pick up any more passengers. People could leave the bus but not board them. On the return journey
passengers could not a l ight until the bus reached Wilpshire. Ribble services 221 to
Copster Green and 229 to Brockhall Hospital will
also divert along Whalley Range in Blackburn.
Fares for local journeys will be the same as those charged by Blackburn Transport.

£500 GRANT FOR HALL
A GRANT of £500 has been made by the Ribble V a l le y Council to Clitheroe Parish Church Hall, under the scheme to assist artistic and cultural organisations. At a council meeting,
Coun. Fred Green (Wilp shire) hoped members would bear in mind in the future that other areas re ceived as much considera tion as Clitheroe had. Coun. Mrs Myra Clegg
(Wiswell) said that it was felt that, as well as being church ha ll, the
Clitheroe building was the only large community hall in that area. She suggested that the
Policy Working Group look at the matter for the future.

Plea to speed up repairs to railings
CONCERN that there could be a serious acci dent at B aw d lan d s , Clitheroe, if the railings there were not repaired quickly, was expressed to Ribble Valley councillors.
Coun. B e r t Jones
(Clitheroe) said, that if anyone could put pressure on British Rail, which is responsible for the rail ings, to speed up replace ments then it would be of benefit to everyone.
He said that the lack of
railings was causing hard ship to people in the area. “There is also a danger that, with schools on holi day, children could be playing bn the road and if something is not done quickly there could be a serious accident,” he said.
Chairman of the Public
Works and Health Com mittee, Coun. Harry Waddington (Gisburn) said that the council was doing its best to have British Rail erect new railings.
They were knocked
down weeks ago following a road accident.
Roadworks
ROADWORKS in Lower- gate, Clitheroe, should be completed a week tomor row, the Ribble Valley Council was told.
