for which Lancashire Na tional Fanners’ Union has been waging a long-stand ing battle for special sup port measures, have been labelled the “ forgotten men” or “ the Cinderella sector” of farming. Now that the Govern

farm’s future
there is still a question mark over what help it will offer John and his son. John Falshaw f irs t
rented this 100-acre hold ing in the early 1970s. To make it pay, daitpdng ap peared the practical solu tion despite the physical difficulties o f a very heavy land holding which became badly cut up if the cows were not taken in early fo r winter and turned out late the follow ing spring. This extended winter
highlights the problems faced by marginal land fa rm e r s — a se v en months winter and high feeding and housing bills. By renting additional
grass keep John Falshaw has been able to increase his Windylea Herd of Pedigree Friesian milkers to 68 (with a target ceil ing of 70) from the 42 head with which he started. He also lambs about 70 mules for fat lamb and there is a small
beef herd. Like other marginal
land farmers John Fal shaw is now wondering what exactly the marginal land aid promised for the future will give him be cause at present Europe is determined to curb sur plus milk. Yet milk production on
many marginal land farms is the only way to earn a decent living and why; he asks, should the man who is;producing milk against the odds be denied sup port? Alternatives which the margin land men may consider also have ques- tionmarks. Will the sheep meat regime survive as it is today and what hope is there for a boost for beef? So far as he is con
cerned it is the farm, not the production policy pur sued, that should qualify. “For us milk is the only
means towards securing a reasonable standard of living. Summer milk is out and therefore we are faced with the reality of a month longer when we are on winter feed costing £170 a tonne and silage when others, more fortu nately placed, can put their cattle on to spring
grass,” he commented. Looking to the future,
he does not want to see his son’s interest in pedig ree breeding, thwarted by a policy geared to help marginal land farms used as a blunt instrument to control milk output. This is a problem
shared by many “green top” producers in East Lancashire. Without the retail milk rounds, many of the units would be too small to survive if milk production was outlawed by red tape. John Falshaw is con
vinced that marginal land farmers can fulfil an im portant role in Lancashire farming. All they seek is help to counter the disad vantages of climate and topography. Such farms are also in
the front line of, conserva tion in the countryside. Far better, he argues, that they should survive as viable units. That would ensure that conser-. vation can be made to pay rather than be a consequ ence of decay.
rots and potatoes. Much of the marketing
is done nationwide and overseas through Knows- ley Salads, of which Mr Heyes is a director and currently company chair man/ though there are also direct sales in the ' surrounding area;. Forty miles away at the
Chipping farm where Mr Heyes is . in partnership with his fa th e r and brother Basil, life is af fected very much by the weather. The farm is situated on
land ranging from 700 to 1,700 . ft above sea level and' sheep and beef cattle are reared. There are about 600, and 60 pedigree Galloway.. mothers and
their offspring. ; The farm is run by Mr
Ken Dickinson, but Mr Heyes regularly travels from, Rainford to keep in touch. Sinde his family bought
the fai-m in 1960, Mr Heyes has come to great ly appreciate the area. “ It’s a beautiful district and,the people are very
nice,” he said. Married with three chil
dren, Mr Heyes is the third member o f his family to be elected to the top table of the NFU county branch. His father was chairman in 1956 and his uncle, John Heyes, oc cupied the same office in 1950. An enthusiastic member
of St Helens NFU, he was branch chairman in the mid-1970s, at which time he also joined the Executive Committee of the Lancashire NFU. He has chaired the
Tenant Farmers’ Commit tee on his way to the vice chairmanship o f the county branch, and his community involvement includes membership of his local PCC and service on the Deanery Synod and the advisory commit tee of Rainford YFC. Away from farming his
interests include shooting and watching Liverpool
FC. Mr Heyes is a great
believer in the landlord- tenancy system. Thirty-five per cent of
land in this country is cur rently tenanted and the rest is either owner-oc cupied or taken in hand by the landlord. He feels that the NFU-

POPULAR television and radio programmes are helping farmers counter the criticisms levelled at them, says Clayton-le- Dale farmer Peter Ains worth. At the NFU annual
meeting in London, Mr Ainsworth, of Showley Fold Farm, said that programmes such as “Em- merdale Farm” and “The Archers” did far more
good for agriculture than any counter-attack the union might launch. Mr Ainsworth, who is
married with four daugh ters confesses, however, that he is not a regular follower of such prog rammes. I’m too busy to watch
them all the time,” he says. “But they do give us a good image and I think the NFU should encour
age programmes such as these and assist in the making of them, instead of continually grumbling about the other program mes which appear.”
Mr Ainsworth, who
keeps a dairy herd on his 62-acre farm, is chairman of the Wilpshire group of the NFU and is also the group’s delegate to the Lancashire branch.
