The first of these came

from Anne Morris. Her hat-trick completed, she saw team-mate Katherine Wyld score another two to grab herself a hat-trick and then Anne scored her fourth, and Clitheroe’s final goal.

Clitheroe used both substi

of the Ribble Valley Mayor’s charity for medi cal research — features three gruelling disciplines, a 10-miles run, a 20-mile cycle ride and a swim at Ribblesdale Pool, with each competitor having to complete 60 lengths! . IF it is goals and thrills you like, then Shawbridge was the place to be on Saturday. If, on the other hand, you are a purist and like your football played to perfection with teams having to earn their re wards, then you would have gone home disil lusioned. For sheer entertain

ment this game could not be bettered, but it was littered by gift goals and sloppy play from both sides. Vinney Shaw set the

tone of the match in the ninth minute by carelessly putting his back pass wide of the stranded Denis Underwood to give Ros sendale a shock lead. Four minutes later Gary Butcher put matters right beating the offside trap and lobbing the ball over goalkeeper Stevenson’s head. In the 23rd minute John

Clitheroe go

top after nine goal thriller

CLITHEROE are top of the North West Coun ties Football League Division Two as a result of the exciting 5-4 win over Rossendale, at Shawbridge, on Saturday. With Warrington Town losing at Droylsden, Clitheroe jumped over them into top spot.

Although many feel

that Eric Whalley’s men have not yet hit top form, they have done enough to “lead the pack” and one of the main reasons has been the form of Clive Dunn. What a revelation he is

this season. He is to Clitheroe what Bryan Robson is to Manchester United. Clive showed all his best form on Saturday

scoring two goals to make him joint leading marks man with Steve Mullen, on nine each. While the form of sev-

■ . players blows hot and coid, Dunn has been a shining light and is one, if not the main reason that Clitheroe sit proudly at the top of the league this week. The good news for Re

serve team manager John Whalley this week was the return of striker Simon Whiteside following a long lay-off through injury. Simon, back in training

for two weeks, was named substitute for the Reserve’s visit to Whal

ley, on Saturday. Due to the large ex

pense in staging the FA Vase first-round tie at home to Arnold Kings- well, a week on Saturday, admission prices will be £1.20 (adults) and 60p (OAPs and children). The Shawbridge com

mittee apologises for this increase, but points out that the club have to meet the visitor’s travelling ex penses, as well as the fees of the r e fe r e e and linesmen. Chairman Cyril

Whiteside commented: “Despite these increases we will make a loss on the game, although we readily accept that fact and do not want to sound pitiful about it. “We value the fine sup

Taylor was “chopped down” by the ’keeper. Martin Eatough’s spot- kick was saved, but the mid-field man followed up the rebound to give Clitheroe a 2-1 lead. Then followed goals in

the 40th and 41st mi nutes. Cohen headed home unchallenged and O’Neill rifled a tremend ous shot. Clitheroe swiftly re

following a determined solo charge which was driven on by the rest of the forwards, but Black burn held out. Clitheroe’s only score, a

penalty, came from Laid- law, a good effort from long range. The only other consolation was that the Blackburn team did not r egis ter a score during the second period.

Clitheroe: Fielding, Holden, Laidlaw, Greatorex, P. Dux- bury, Emmott, Tattersall, Harris, Dinsdale, Dubowski, I. Duxbury, Newton, Byrne, Ridehalgn, Ruickbie.

Courage is not

plied. Gary Butcher’s cross was met at the far post by Clive Dunn who cheekily back-headed home in the 44th minute. With the score at 3-3 at

half time it was thought both defences would tight en up and stop the “goal flow,” but it wasn’t to be. With just three minutes

of the second half gone, Peter Hutchinson emu lated Shaw’s first-half mistake. This time the ball didn’t elude Under wood, but fell at the feet of Rossendale’s Mahon. Underwood’s challenge was adjudged a penalty and Byron hammered home the spot-kick to give Rossendale a 4-3 lead. There then followed.

AFTER a dismal first half — and about to face a strong wind in the second — Clitheroe 2nds, de pleted by injury, looked set for an overwhelming defeat against a powerful and well-drilled Blackburn side.

Clitheroe’s best spell of the match as they at last came to grips with a swirling wind, a lively ball and a more than alert Rossendale side. Hutchinson made

The inexperienced Lit-

tlemoor side were 24-0 down from five tries by the opposition who were playing 15-man running rugby. However, a rous ing half-time team' talk put heart and courage into Clitheroe, who then took the game to the op ponents. Nigel Crossley led the

amends for his part in Rossendale’s fourth goal by grabbing Clitheroe’s equaliser and then, in a dramatic finish, the best player on the pitch, Dunn rounded off a superb move started by substi tute Andy Hunt and car ried on by Butcher. Clitheroe were again

without Mick Ashcroft through illness. Men-of- the-match were Kinder, T aylor, Dunn and Butcher. C l i th e ro e : Underwood,

forwards in driving mauls for as much as half the length of the pitch and David Slinger made pug nacious runs from full back. Newcomers to the side,

Chris Barlow and John Robins, fought hard in the loose and Malcolm Heenan had the courage to make several decisive breaks from scrum-half. Unfortunately, courage was not enough and

‘ Clitheroe did not have the luck to cross the line, de spite all their pressure. Blackburn were fortunate to run-in three tries in the final minutes to make the score" at the finish unre presentative of how the full 80 minutes Had gone.
