MEMBERS of Clitheroe and District Chamber of Trade stood in silence at their meeting on Tuesday in memory of Mr Bill Cooper, their secretary for the past 12 years. Mr Cooper, of Lancas­


ter Drive, Clitheroe, died- in hospital on Monday. He had recently indi­ cated to the Chamber that he wished to relinquish his post as soon as a re­ placement could be found and a new appointment had just been made. Mr Cooper rendered


valuable service to the Chamber, working untir­ ingly on numerous negoti­ ations with the local au­ thority and other organ­ isations. He was instru­ mental in helping to pro­ duce the Chamber’s offi­ cial Clitheroe and later Ribble Valley guides. A marketing consultant


working on his own ac­ count, with particular in­ terest in the textile busi­ ness, Mr Cooper had lived in Clitheroe since 1969. He was interested in


politics, but of an inde­ pendent mind, and had acted as agent for several local independent candi­ dates in the council elec­ tions. He lea v e s a wife,

the past three years at Castleford, Clitheroe, was for many years a weaver at a Billington mill. She also worked at the


former Dean’s Union Store and until about 1950. was employed as a cleaner at Blackburn Cathedral. Between the wars she


used her cookery skills to good effect as a demon­ strator for a'company sel­


ling gas appliances. , Her other interests in­


cluded playing the ukulele and taking part in variety ‘concerts in the village. .
