tired 10 years ago the business was taken’over by his nephew, Mr Arthur Norman. Mr Lofthouse served as


a fireman ,in the town from 1926 to 1942. Keenly interested in


sport, he was a regular supporter of Blackburn Rovers and Burnley FC in his youth. In his latter years, his


interests included bowls and watching sport on television. Mr Lofthouse leaves a


wife, Mary, son Frank and daughter, Dorothy. A service will be held,


at St James’s Church, Clitheroe, today, prior to cremation at Accrington.

she became a housewife, and enjoyed looking after her home. Formerly of Mitchell

CLITHEROE Town Council has suggested a compromise following the' decision to charge pen­ sioners lOp an hour for using the Castle bowling green. A request is being


made to the Ribble Valley Council to allow senior citizens to use one green free of charge while leav­ ing the other one avail­ able to younger members of the public. The charge was sug­


gested after complaints were r e c e iv ed la s t summer about pensioners hogging the bowling greens.

Wounding charge


TWO men accused of wounding a Blackburn taxi driver with intent to cause grievous bodily harm are due to make a second appearance before Clitheroe magistrates today. The men, Carl Owen


(20), of King Street, Whalley, and Mark Edward Croasdale (18), of The Crescent, Clitheroe, are also charged with making off without pay­ ment of a £6 taxi fare. Following a court appear­ ance a week yesterday they were remanded in custody.

Pupils aim for. novel record


RIBBLESDALE pupils will shortly be cramming more than 1,000 match­ boxes full of tiny objects to raise cash for their school’s funds. Each of the school’s


1,060 pupils will be given a Bryant and May match­ box on Monday and told to fill it with as many “useful items” as possible to raise money through sponsorship. At the week’s end, the


boxes will be emptied and the items counted. There is a prize for ’the pupil who collects the most and one for the most success­ ful fund-raiser. The school has been


told that there is no entry in the Guinness Book of Records for filling match­ boxes, so it hopes its ef­ forts will give cause' to remedy this.


Car destroyed


A CAR stolen from Kirk- moor Road, Clitheroe, was later found ablaze in a street in Oswaldtwistle. The vehicle, a Y-regis- tered Vauxhall Astra, was completely destroyed. It was valued at £6,300.
