Dog breeder foregoes top event invitation

DOG lover Mr Wilfred Wrigley has had to turn down an invitation to take part in a prestigious event for the county’ s top breeders.

Mr Wrigley, of West

View, was asked to ex hibit at next month’s “Superdog 83” event at Wembley, after being judged best Border Ter rier breeder of the year in Britain by a major pet food firm and breeders’ journal.

But he cannot attend

because of his wife Mary’s illness. The “superdog” event,

being held for the first time, will feature the best

of various breeds in the country in a non-competi tive show.

Mr Wrigley (67) won

the best breeder accolade for his blue and tan bitch Ch. Dutton Le Steel Blue, winner of the open bitch class and a championship certificate at Crafts last year.

He was philosphical

about not being able to take part at Wembley:

“After all’s said and done, they cannot take the achievement away from

you.” Stile repairs

•WHALLEY Parish Coun cil is to investigate what repairs need to be canned out to a stile at the Queen Elizabeth II playing field entrance.

Coun. Mrs Kathleen

Sharpies said at a meeting that the stile was in a dangerous state and needed repairing. “Some one is going to break a leg or something as the weather gets worse,” she said.

scheme, commissioned by the Ribble Valley Council, gained its award in the “housing for the elderly” section. The awards are spon

sored by the Department of the Environment, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Na tional House Building Council to encourage high standards of design and layout in private and public sector housing. Entries were assessed

not only for external ap pearance, layout, land scaping and grouping of buildings and their rela tionship to the setting and neighbourhood amenities, but also internal design, building quality, work manship, choice of build ing materials, mainte nance and user satisfac tion. The planning of residen

tial roads and footpaths, siting of garages and pro vision of parking spaces was also taken into account. The assessors praised

the layout of the Chat- burn site, saying there is a strong sense of enclo sure with a pleasing ba lance between communal space and privacy much appreciated by the resi dents. Also favoured was the

signed by Borough Plan ning and Technical Officer Mr Philip Bailey, assisted by Mr Frank Lloyd and Mr Bob Moffat, and buil ders were Frankland and Smith.

Dangerous part

FOR having a hole with a sharp jagged edge in the wing of his car, David Peters (19), of Mayfield Avenue, Clitheroe, was fined £40 by the town’s magistrates, with £6 costs. In a letter to the court,

the defendant said that he had not realised the wing was so badly rusted.

‘Foolish’ act leads to fines

secuting, said that a policeman had seen the defendant pedalling a cycle in Moor Lane, Clitheroe, against the one-way traffic flow, with another young man, Rus sell Summers, riding on the seat. The cycle had no lights

or reflector. In a letter to the court,

Porter described the inci dent as “just an act of

foolishness.” He was fined £20 for

riding the cycle in the wrong direction, £10 for being one of two people on a cycle, and a further £10 in each case for having no lights and no reflector. For his part in the off

ence, Summers (18), of W a shbrook C lose,,

Barrow, was fined £10, with £6 costs.

Chief Executive Mrl

Michael Jackson explained that some members of staff in the administration section of the Planning Department were not happy with their workload or wage levels. “The management felt

that, with the agreement of the staff, the fairest way to settle the matter was to call in an indepen dent body.” But he added: “Every

thing is very amicable. There is no real dispute.” Mr Jackson said the

Ribble Valley Council is about the only one in Lan cashire which does not have its own management | services team. “We do not justify em

ploying that calibre of I staff,” he explained. “ The Preston team

kindly agreed to . help us out, because it is a fairly small job.” The survey will take in

staffing and pay levels, working arrangements | and general efficiency. Mrs Beryl Inman,

chairman of the Clitheroe I branch of Nalgo, agreed that the situation was ] very amicable. “Staffing levels and the I

systems being used are the main things the staff are not happy with,” she said. “We’re quite looking | forward-to the results.”
