Vital lapse loses chance of replay

Bishop Auckland 1, Clitheroe 0

A VITAL lapse of concentration in the 70th minute cost Clitheroe a lucrative replay at Shawbridge against Bishop Auckland in the F A Cup

2nd qualifying round. Until then manager

Eric Whalley’s defensive tactics had kept the famous blue shirts at bay. The home s id e had become frustrated by the

Clitheroe defensive wall and a draw looked likely. But with 20 minutes

r

left a long high cross was floated into the visitors’ penalty area and Bishop’s Har ry Dunn climbed above Clive Dunn and headed the ball in via the post. Clitheroe protested that

in I

Clive Dunn had been “held down” but the re feree was adamant that the goal was a good one. Clitheroe abandoned their defensive role and

began seeking an equal iser and the home goal had a charmed life. How ever, it was too late and time ran out, but there was no disgrace in the 1-0 defeat.

In retrospect Clitheroe

had the capability to have won for Bishop Auckland did not pose the same problems as South Bank in the previous round. They are struggling near the bottom of the North ern League table.

However, the honour of

playing on the famous pitch against a club that in its golden days played at Wembley in 18 FA Amateur Cup finals is one

Rampant Sale fail to push home advantage

Clithcroe RUFC 1st XV 4, Sale 3rd XV 21

THE omens were as dark as the rain clouds gathering over Pendle Hill as a weakened Clitheroe side took the field against a typically powerful Sale outfit.

Indeed the doubtful

omens became dramatical ly worse as Clitheroe were rocked by four tries in the space of 20 minutes by a rampant Sale XV, all of which were converted. The home side, suffering

from the loss of players such as John Robson, Mick Nicholls, Alan Sweeney, David Slinger and the Greatorex brothers through injury, rocked peril ously close to the edge of a heavy defeat.

LEAGUE SOCCER

RETURNS NORTH West Counties League soccer returns to Shawbridge on Saturday when Clitheroe play in a r e a r r a n g e d f ix tu r e against Bacup Borough (kick-off 3 p.m.).

Clitheroe, so unlucky

in the FA Cup against Bishop Auckland on Saturday, should have been away to Chcadle Town but that game had to be postponed because o f Cheadle’s involvement in the FA Challenge

Cup. Last season Clitheroe

did the “ double” over Bacup with 2-0 and 2-1 victories.

But this season Bacup

are a much improved side and are level on points with Clitheroe.

Ladies start with victory

IN their first game of the season, Empress Squash Ladies' team had a 3-2 victory away over East Lancs 3rds. Marilyn Fletcher played well

to win 3-1, while Sheila Willis fought her way back from 0-2 down to win her match 3-2. Kay Plant also had a long

match, just losing in the fifth. Susan Beggs won the first game but lost 1-3. With the game at 2-2, it was

up to Sharon Willis to clinch victory for Empress. This she did easily, completely outclas sing her opponent for an excel

lent 3-0 win.

Yet unaccountably Sale went

off the boil and failed to push home their advantage and

indeed allowed the Clitheroe side to claw back. The half-time score of 24-0 was, in the light of the first half possession, somewhat flattering. However, the second half proved quite different. Clitheroe matched the Man

that does Clitheroe proud.. Clitheroe can hold their heads high in defeat for they gave everything. They deserve a pat on the back for bringing a little F A Cup glory to' the town. Clitheroe; Underwood,

Reserves take derby points

Waddington 2 Clithcroe Res 3

CLITHEROE Res were with out their leading goalscorer for this local derby in the East Lancashire Football League.

The villagers opened strongly

and took an early lead through Green when 'keeper Howard

Eushed a weak shot against the ar for Green to net the

rebound. Clitheroe’s response was to

take hold of the game and storm into a 3-1 lead with an own goal and two from Geoff Young, the second one a screamer.

Waddington pulled a goal

back before half time with a 25- yard shot from Geldard.

Both sides had chances after

the break and with Howard seeming unsure of himself in the Clitheroe goal it required good defensive work by Braith- waite and Kinder to keep Wad dington out. Young had an out standing game for Clitheroe.

Clithcroc Res: Howard,

chester side throughout, con tinually frustrating the opposi tion with gritty play in defence and Robin Lund leading a more confident-looking back division with a number of penetrating runs. Meanwhile in the forwards,

Tony Dubowski and Joe Holden were outstanding under dif ficult conditions, as the Clitheroe pack fought desper ately to regain some of the away side’s monopoly of early possession. Clitheroe’s try came five mi

nutes from tne end, Paul Taberner scoring a sterling try after the ball was moved quick ly and accurately down the line. Clitheroe’s 2nd team game

against Sale 4th XV was can celled due to selection problems caused by injuries, a dark cloud

on an otherwise brightening horizon. Clithcroc RUFC: Wardle,

D. Fielding, Lund, Hyde, Emmott, Tabemer, Duxbury, Ridehalgh, Byrne, Newton, Williamson, Ramsey, Dubows ki, Dinsdale, Holden.

Chatburn in form for Shield tie

CHATBURN at last found win ning form in this Lancashire Amateur Shield game. They always seemed to be in com mand and had many chances to score but only managed a couple from Jimmy Coleboume in tne first half. The first came after 10 minutes when a defen sive mix-up allowed him to race through and the second 10 mi nutes after that when he headed home a cross and almost completed a hat-trick.

Bad judgment by goalkeeper

Winckley enabled the visitors to pull a goal back.

Chatbum continued in their

aggressive style after the break and Steve Anderson made the game safe with a fine drive.

Ribblesdale football

THE past few days have seen Ribblesdale School teams in volved in plenty of football action. The games against Mount Carmel saw all teams losing, with the third year thrashed 12-1 against a big, strong side.

The first year team was most

disappointing going down 4-3 after leading 3-1 but they have made amends by defeating the Grammar School and St Christ opher’s.

The second year have played

some excellent football and their reward came with a 5-2 win over the Grammar School. They were unlucky to lose against Mount Carmel who

have yet to lose a game. The third year had a most

encouraging win against Clitheroe Grammar School 3-1 after being beaten by the same side 6-0 the previous week, but lack of aggression and poor passing lea to another heavy defeat against St Christopher’s in the Hyndbum League. It is hoped for a much improved performance , in their next game against Shadsworth in the Lan cashire Under-14’s knock-out cup.

The fourth year have relied

too much on Tim Dawson and the results have been poor in his absence, a 3-0 defeat against Mount Carmel and in an abysmal game at St Christ ophers only Middleton came out with any credit.

tremendous end-to-end game against Mount Carmel who had gone 11 games without defeat and that included a win of 3-0 against the Lancashire Schools Champions, St Christopher’s. Ribblesdale were leading 2-1 with only minutes to go but eventually went down 3-2 with virtually the last kick of the

A FINE second half perform ance by Rimington gained them two points in this local derby, despite being two goals behind

and Pratt pulled one back from a narrow angle early in the second half. A Fred Smalley free kick gave Rimington the equaliser and soon after Pratt headed them into the lead. Frankland made sure of victoiy with a strong drive to make it four. With two minutes remaining,
