puts Clitheroe further ahead
Clitheroe 168 for 9, Read 66 all out ^
CLITHEROE maintained their lead at the top of the Thwaites Ribblesdale Senior Cricket League with a convinc ing win over Read in this entertaining derby, match at Chatburn Road.
What could have
been an interesting fight, certainly for the
winning draw, became a one-sided affair after the visitors’ middle order collapsed. Put into bat first,
Clitheroe’s target was to hit something approaching 180 runs, but it soon became apparent that this would be difficult. Tight fielding and great bowling from Read’s John Waddington and Philip Hanson, r e s t r ic t e d Clitheroe’s run rate to less than three an over. Richard Goodway and Graham Bushell were in
troduced into the attack and wickets fell. First to go were open
ers Andrew Townsley (22) and Neil Duckworth (13), both falling to Goodway’s off-spin. Then David Hardcastle

46 runs before being caught and bowled by Goodway, who finished with 5 for 51. Read had taken 2hr
46min. to bowl their 36 overs and this meant that with sensible batting, a three-point total of around 130 was a distinct possi bility as a first option. This did not material

finished with richly-de served figures of 6 for 29. It was he who quelled
any possible damage that Read’s batsmen may have tried to wreak on the Chatburn Road side. From Read’s point of .
view, the most disappoint ing aspect of the game must have been their middle order collapse. The visitors went from
45 for four to 56 for nine. Still, Clitheroe had to work to remove Read’s
last wicket. That pleasure fell to Rodney Booth who was brought into the attack to replace Garth Sutcliffe. Clitheroe can be well
satisfied with a good per formance which saw them bat sensibly in difficult conditions and then bowl and field well. They will be difficult to dislodge from the top if they can maintain this form. Stephen Rushton was
Read’s only batsman to reach double figures and it is to be hoped that their inept performance was caused by the team suf-

Easy win for Baxenden
Whalley 113 all out, Baxenden 114 for 3.
WHALLEY were comprehensively beaten by 7 wickets on Saturday, after a batting display which at best could be described as mediocre.
Keith Eatham batted a
long time for 41 but even he, after the early dismis sals of professional Snell- grove and Mark Fallon could make no headway against the two-pronged off-spin attack of veteran John Ingham and stand-in professional Aftab Baloch. The Whalley innings
meandered along wickets falling at regular intervals and finally closed at 113. This total was far too few on a good batting wicket and to win Whalley had to take Baloch’s wicket fairly quickly. He arrived at the crease with the score at
32 for 1 when Snellgrove bowled opener Clegg for 8 and proceeded to show how easy batting was with the help of Derek
Pilling 16 not out. He was finally caught
behind off Snellgrove for 51 with only 20 runs re quired. For Whalley Snellgrove
.bowled a steady spell of 12 overs and took the three wickets that fell for

37 runs, but the best home bowler was again
_ Tony Wright. He had a magnificent spell of 8-2- 17-0 and with a bit of luck could have had 4 or 5
Cambrian Cup win for Clitheroe FC
Clitheroe 4, Rossendale United 1 _____________
CLITHEROE cruised to a convincing win over Rossen dale United when the clubs clashed in this group three Cambrian Cup game at Shawbridge.
The first half did not provide much action for the spectators,
with Clitheroe looking a little rusty and. Rossendale only had a couple of shots. But in the second half the
game exploded like a firecrack er, with Rossendale taking an unexpected lead through their centre half Gary. Holden shortly after the restart. Then C l i th e r o e ’ s John
Taylor, who was having a quiet game by his standards, put the
club back on equal terms in the 57th minute.
It was a goal with class ,
stamped all over it much to the delight of the 101 fans at the
ground. Then Clitheroe really went to
town and Taylor added two penalties, for nis hat-trick, and

Boys wanted for Henthorn
CLITHEROE boys’ football club Henthorn United is searching for players for the new season, which begins in September. The club fields sides, under-

could have been repeated on several occasions this season. Whalley, unless they
run up' a succession of wins would now seem to have the chance this season of honours even, and even this slim hope will not happen until the middle order batting per forms more consistently.

over pacemakers Gisburn has thrown the second di vision wide open again. Longridge are promoted but could be forced to a play-off for the champion ship against Gisburn. Al ternatively Gisburn them selves might well have to play Chipping to decide the runners-up spot. Division One

Another defeat
Clitheroe 2nd 148, Lower Danvcn 149 for 6.
CLITHEROE 2nd went down to yet another
defeat at the hands of runaway Ribblesdale League Division One lead ers Lower Darwen. Put in to bat on a
wicket with plenty of grass, Clitheroe were soon in trouble, losing Chris Musson in the first over, and Simon Westh- ead in the second. Nigel Thornton came to
the rescue with 39 runs. Aided by Stephen Black burn he pushed Clitheroe’s score along at a reasonable pace until Blackburn was giv en out lbw. From then on, the 2nds crumbled and at one stage
were 95 for 9. A superb last wicket
partnership of 53 between Brian Keating 21 not out, and Malcolm Blackburn (38), swung the game back in Clitheroe’s favour, with a final score of 148 all out after 33.6 overs. Lower Danven got off
to a slow but steady start, and looked good having scored 60 runs for the loss of only two wickets. Kim Bleazard swung
the game Clitheroe’s way once again, taking three wickets in eight de liveries, changing the game’s . complexion at 64 for 5. But C. Avison (46), and
• I. Cordingley (22), the home team’s skipper, had other ideas and proceeded to belt the ball to all cor ners of the ground, the

It was a close run thing
made a promising start With Mick Booth knocking 29 runs off the visitors’ attack. However, the middle
order failed to capitalise on the beginning Booth and fellow opener Steve Wales (15) made. In reply, Feniscowles
were at one stage 19 for 2, but then rallied thanks to the second dubious um piring decision when Neil Hanson should have been g iv en out. He and McAreavy put on 68 for the third wicket. And that turned the game in the visitors’ favour. Clitheroe simply had not scored enough runs. Clitheroe 3rd: M, Booth 29,

ers’ pro, made a break through in the third over, bowling opener Kendall for one run. However, after 12
overs, Settle had slowly progressed to 39 for one, with Foster and Andrews being outscored by the number of extras Wander ers were giving the home side! Seedle then struck again, taking two wickets in the 13th over. He clean bowled Andrews (7), and also claimed the new bats man Verden’s wicket. In1 the next over David O’Neill dismissed the only remaining opener, Foster (15). And then two overs later, O’Neill, making his first senior team appear ance this season, had Pre ston caught for 0 and later Newhouse (10). Meanwhile Keith Taylor
had been brought into the Wanderers’ attack, and he
struck in his second over, having Weavers caught behind for 33. Then Taylor took his second and final Settle wicket in the 30th over, removing Kendal, who was caught by Paul Seedle. John Seedle cleaned up
the Settle tail end and ended a very productive day’s work with figures of five wickets for 32 runs. Don Weavers was Set
tle’s most effective bats man, making 33 runs. But second top scorer was extras, with Wanderers again giving away 26, the only fault in an excellent team performance. Drama prevailed when
Wanderers set about the' task of making the re quired 121 runs for vic tory. Jamie Mitchell, so often this season the team’s most consistent run-grabber was given out lbw off the first ball he faced. So Wanderers found
themselves one wicket down with only one run
