performance led by five- goal hero John Taylor and skipper Mick Ashcroft, who bagged his first NW Counties League hat- trick, and from the centre half position at that. It was a pity that the attend

ance for tnis goals-feast was Shawbridge’s lowest of the season. This was probably due in part to poor weather and

Clitheroe’s failure to score in any o f their previous three home games. After a very even opening

Mick Ashcroft gave Clitheroe a 23rd minute lead with a peach of a goal. Nigel Whiteside’s

pin-point free-kick was headed on by David Proos and Ash

croft met the ball firmly with a header into the comer of the net.

Ashcroft was again on the

spot to volley home Clitheroe’s second goal in the 36th minute. John Taylor rounded off the first half by converting a penal ty after a foul on Ronnie Drugan. In th e s e c o n d h a l f , Clitheroe’s flowing football had

IN a dour struggle which lacked entertainment but produced some committed defensive rugby, Blackburn 3rd overcame Clitheroe 1st by a drop goal and two penalty goals to a penalty goal.

The Blackburn side opened

the scoring with a smartly- taken drop goal following a scrum in front of the Clitheroe posts. The home team made every effort to use the width of the field and the pace of their two wings, but unfortunately the conditions and the opposing

defence always thwarted them. went further

Sweet revenge

for Sabden Sabden 15,

Chatbum Res 2

SABDEN gained sweet re venge for their only defeat of the season when they over whelmed an inexperienced Chatburn side to set up a new club goal scoring record. The victory, avenging a 2-1

defeat by Chatbum, was distin guished by Sabden’s biggest goals haul in 90 minutes since the club reformed seven years ago. The game was a closer con

test than the scoreline sug gests, but by half-time Sabden had built up an 8-1 lead in this Marsden League clash. Top scorer was Colin Marr,

with five, -Terry Davies bagged four and Dean Halliwell and Brian Haythornthwaite two each. Barry Wareing and Ian Hay completed, the Sabden scoring. Sabden: Weir, Whitewell,

Kings Arms 1

THOUGH they never achieved their normal level of perform ance, Transport safely ac counted for bottom club Kings Arms. Devine was forced to a splen

did save to deny Butler, but from the comer that followed, Kay opened the scoring with a deft flick header. The home side enjoyed the

lion’s share of the play, but were' unable to add to this early goal, though defenders Dobson and Targett went close. Midway through the second

half, Jeffries equalised for Kings with a hotly disputed goaf and this signalled a period of ascendancy for the visitors. W e a th e r in g the sto rm.

Transport bounced back and two goals in a minute by Lawson, one a spectacular volley, effectively ended all op position. Bradley added a fourth goal near the end. For the home side, full-backs

Dobson and Bean were out standing, and Kay, returning from suspension, gave his usual consistent performance. Kings were well served by keeper Devine who made some

fine saves and also by the vet eran Penman. Kings: P. Devine, Kenyon, Penman, Isherwood, Mus-

Rimington in control

Ribchester Res 1, Rimington 2

RIMINGTON had to withstand

early pressure, but stood firm and gradually took control of midfield. They were lucky not to take

the lead when a strong drive from Frankland just cleared the Ribchester bar. It was no surprise when they

took the lead through F. Smal ley after Hartley nad headed on.

After half-time the pace

became furious and Scott set tled the match in the 60th minute with a tremendous 25

yard shot. Ribchester did not give up

easily and were denied by a fine save from Wareing. Soon afterwards Pratt put

Hartley clear for Rimington; his shot narrowly missed the

net. All that remained was for Ribchester to grab a consola tion goal well into injury time. Overall, it was a fine team

National title for Gareth

GRINDLETON junior cyclist Gareth Morris (16) won his first national title on Saturday — the English Schools’ National Hill Climbing Championship at Ashurst Beacon, Parbold, near

Wigan. Facing 90 competitors from

all over the country, he rode the 1.7 mile climb in 6 minutes 11.2 seconds, 2.8 seconds ahead of runner-up Neil Blackman, of

Wales. This is Gareth’s third title

success this year. Two weeks ago he won the English Schools’ North West Cyclo Cross Championships at Glos- sop, and in September won the Lakeland Division Junior Road Race.

Blackburn 4ths 22 Clitheroe 2nds 4

NOT for the first time, mis takes and a lack of concentra

formance on Saturday. Blackburn benefited three

times from Clitheroe errors to run out comfortable winners by five tries and a conversion, to a single Clitheroe try by winger Brian Maloney. The Littlemoor side started

well and enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with Duxbury and Workman both almost forcing their way over. But gradually Clitheroe’s lack of good lineout possession

took its toll. Blackburn, who enjoyed rich pickings through out the match, took the lead shortly before half time. Clitheroe started the second

Rivals in lively draw

Whalley AC 2, Waddington 2

THESE two rivals pro duced an entertaining af ternoon’s football. Though it finished all square, both sides had the chances to clinch the points. C e lt ic ’ s manager, John

Bargh, brought new signing Philip Taylor in at left back ana had Peter Doman fully fit again in the forward line. A hesitant Celtic defence al lowed Gardner at least three

' good scoring chances in the first 15 minutes, but one effort went wide, another hit the bar and Ronnan saved the third. But Celtic took the lead

when ’keeper Nuttall could only parry an O’Neill free-kick and Money followed up to easily. Waddington’hit back immedi

late on after a jinking break by Graeme Tindall with Brian Maloney supporting well to score. Rudd’s conversion from a difficult angle hit a post. Clitheroe will have to work

hard on their lineout play in the coming weeks, although on Saturday their whole approach lacked method and positive ness. On the brighter side, the

play of veterans Alan Rudd and Duncan Fielding was always positive.
