DOWNHAM, CLITHEROE, LANCASHIRE CLAY HOUSE FARM

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th at 12 noon

Dispersal of the Milking Herd and the Autumn/ Winter Calving Heifers for the Downham Hall

Farm Partnership of 166 NON-PEDIGREE FRIESIANS

including some Holsteins and their crosses and comprising 125 cows and first calf heifers and 41 Autumn/Winter calving Heifers. The majority of the cows are homebred stemming through the generations from their Pedigree Ayrshire herd with the later addition of a few purchased British Holsteins or their crosses. Top quality Friesian A.1. Bulls have been used (mostly MMB proven sires) and the Senior Stock Bull for some years was Whinhill Rushman (RM Sire; RM, RMX Dam). One of the many attractive features of this important sale is the fact that 51 Cows or Heifers will be freshly calved by Sale Day and a further 83 are due before New Year. Another important feature is the youthfulness of the Herd; in the Dairy at present are 34 First Caivers (Home-bred Heifers brought into the dairy during 1982); 17 Second Caivers and a further 39 Third Caivers, represent ing 82% of the Milking herd. The cattle are commercially

managed, lying in during the winter in cubicle houses and milked through a herringbone parlour. The 40 Autumn/Winter calving

home-bred Heifers are most attractive, beinq well qrown and showing great potential, again being sired by the Stock Bull or Proven Friesian Sires by ftl/Herd Sire was WHINHILL RUSH- MAN (Breeder: J. J. Crosier) by HORWOOD ANDY RM and out

of WHINHILL RESTHER RM RMX Ex-7479 kgs. at 4.75% B.F. 5th Calf (by Grove Macbeth RM).

The herd average for 1981/82 was: 49 Cows; 4573 kg. at 3.43%; 38 Heifers: 4290 kg. at 3.42%. C.l. 386 Days.
