New scale of allotments charges

GARDENING is to . be made cheaper for some Clitheroe town council al lotment tenants, thanks to changes in the rent system. Under the existing

rules, a new tenant pays a full year’s rent — £4 for an average-size plot — ir respective of when ii, occupied. . This means that from a

plot re-let during the ye,‘.r the council' collects two full year’s rent, one year each from the old and new tenants. In the case of a veget

able plot, the new tenant is unlikely to reap any produce from his plot the last three months of the rent year up to April. New rules mean that

people first occupying plots between April 1st and September 30th will

pay a full year’s rent; bet ween October 1st and De cember. 31st half a year’s rent only and from Janu ary 1st to March 31st a quarter’s rent. People occupying plots

from April to September w ill pay the w ater charges.

THE adventures of tiny travellers racing through history are portrayed in “Time Bandits” , at the Clitheroe Civic Hall. The film features John Cleese, Sean Connery;' Ralph Richardson and Shelley

Duvall.

Following his phenomenal success in last year’s “HOLIDAY ON ICE” Show, ROBIN COUSINS, our 1980 Olympic and European Champion is back to star in an entirely new presentation of “HOLIDAY ON ICE’82.”

RIBBLE Valley wal kers will be delighted to know that the foot bridge over the Ribble at Dinckley has been repaired. The steel bridge was

one of the casualities of the floods in October, 1980, when the centre bit was washed away and finished up near Preston. Lancashire County

Council workers have spent four weeks re placing the centre span and carrying out reme dial work on the re maining structure. Since the floods wal

kers wanting to cross from Dinckley to Hurst Green have had to go the long way round o v e r R ib ch e s te r

Bridge. The original bridge

was erected in 1951 by Lancashire County Council to replace the old ferry boat service and soon became popular. •

Evening TWG

MEMBERS of Clitheroe Evening Townswomen’s

Guild were given a very informative talk by Mrs Dickinson, of Langho, on “The jo y s ,o f counting calories” .

.A vote of thanks was

given by Mrs B. Brown. The competition for three home-made- scones was won by Mrs E. Wilkinson.

be on February 4th when guest speaker Mr Wal dron’s ' subject will be “Save the children”.

A breath of spring

THE cold weather was forgotten by Clitheroe Flower Club members during a talk and demon stration entitled “Time of promise” , by Mr Craig Bullock, of Clayton-le-

Moors. Looking forward to

warmer times, his arrange ments included a com bined one of snowdrops and daffodils with black ened driftwood and a wooden display using two pieces of blue glass, cane' loops and blue iris. A large church arrange

ment suitable for a spring wedding was created with the help of fresh greenery and silk flowers and a large piece of natural driftwood was used with dried material and orange enchantment lilies.

An unusual antique ,

caSt-iron Japanese lantern with pale pink chrysan themums were spotlighted to the accompaniment of a few bars of “ Clair de lune” representing the custom of lighting lan-. terns in' the moonlight in

Japan. Mi- Bullock was thanked

by Mrs K. Marsh. The annual meeting will be on February 5th..
