PASSION MUSIC
A SERVICE of Passion music at Clitheroe Parish
Church on Sunday was conducted by Canon J. C. Hudson and lessons were read by Miss K. Glisbey, Dr W. D. Oliver and Mr D. Smith. Mrs Linda Carrington
accompanied throughout and Mr Myers conducted the' choir in anthems by Bach, Charles Wood, Ar- cadelt and Handel. In three sections from
the St Luke’s Passion, by J. S. Bach, the soloists were Mr J. Moor, Mr J. P a rk e r and Mr T. Wignall. It was the first time the
organ has been heard in an extended role as an accompanying instrument and proved the success of the new lay-out.
THERE was'something of an international flavour to the Clithei;oe Mayor’s three “at home” evenings held on successive nights last week. For among the total of
more than 500 people who went along were visitors to the area from as far away as Zimbabwe and Australia. For the most part, how
ever, those invited to the ‘at homes” were rep
resentatives of organisa tions and individuals who have helped out and raised funds during the
Mayor’s term of office. Coun. Ainsworth said the evenings were a mar
vellous success. “It is the first time that
we have ever had to. stretch the “ at homp” over three successive nights, but we had to this year because of the num bers involved,” he said. -

“ The Mayoral regalia
and oth^r artefacts from the town’s history were on show and a large number of the people who came along were seeing them for the first time. “Many of them were
virtually newcomers to the town and we. were particularly delighted to greet the visitors to our shores from Australia and Zimbabwe.” Coun. Ainsworth thank
ed everyone who helped to make the evenings a success and particularly the Mayoress’s commit tee. “They worked tre mendously hard,” he! said.

Chess Club
CLITHEROE Chess Club’s A team finished the 1981-2 season on a winning note ^with a vic tory over blackburn A by either four boards to two or
•four-and-a-half boards • to ■ one- and-a-half. The reason for the uncertain
ty in the result is that there is one game — board three — to be adjudicated in* which Black burn are claiming a draw and Clitheroe a win. Brian Carr is in a strong
position with an extra pawn after 46 moves.' His opponent requested adjudication, as is al lowed, after three hours’ play. Wins were recorded-' by
Andrew Cooper (board one), Derek Northage (board two) and Eric Mansfield (board five). New member John Trap- pes-Lomax lost on board four and Stephen Robinson drew on board six. The A team has played. 12
games, winning four, drawing one and losing seven. The -team finished fifth out of seven, four
points clear of the bottom two teams.

said milk was not-needed in primary schools in niral areas such as the Ribble Valley:
“ In the more densely '
