lives depended on the outcome. From Clitheroe’s point of
view, such powerful aggression was a vast improvement on the previous day’s shambles on the same field against a very ordi
nary Ashton outfit, which won 2-0. The Bacup game started at a
fast and furious pace and never slowed down.
Clitheroe, with usual centre-
half Mick Ashcroft playing in attack, were well on top and Ian Wilcox and Dave Gillibrand both went close.
Bacup managed to hold out
thanks to some outstanding de fensive work from giant centre- half Callan and ’keeper Clegg. But they cracked on the half-
hour after a fine build-up down the right wing involving Ash croft and Gillibrand, whose per fect flighted cross eluded Clegg for Ian Ashworth to head his side in front.
The goal was no more than
the Shawbridge team deserved for some excellent attacking football. Bacup, though, always looked dangerous on the break and equalised just before the interval. Warwick broke clear of Ciitheroe’s defence, dribbled round Denis Underwood and
presented Watson with an easy chance. Clitheroe continued to pound
away at Bacup’s goal for most of the second naif. In the 80th minute, Ash

Maroons 4, Blues 3
A TRIAL of strength bet ween two teams chosen from Clitheroe Rugby Union Club’ s players ended with a narrow vic tory for the Maroons due largely to an individual try by Robin Lund, and helped by the Blue’s sus pect tackling. Respective captains were John Coates and Andy Corless. Technically a friendly match,
in practice it was anything but — with places in the 1st XV to
be won. The game was keenly con
tested although play was often scrappy due partly to the teams not having previously played together. The Blues forwards held the
upper hand with Joey Holden, Nigel Crossley and John Walker all prominent. The return of Mick Fox at No 8 was very pleasing after a nine- month lay-off through injury. However, the Blues did not
turn their forward superiority into points, the only reward being one successful penalty kick by Corless midway through the second half. Ear lier he had hit the bar with a penalty kick. Dave Slinger and Andrew
Gordon provided the highlight of the match with their per formances at full-back. They defended resolutely and showed their ability to counter-attack. The match-winning try for
the Maroons came 10 minutes from the end when Lund was allowed to score under the posts.

Six minutes later, Ashcroft
clinched the points with a glori ous header at the near post after another cross from Ash worth.
Overall, Clitheroe were more
than a match for their aggres sive and physical opponents. Ashworth caused endless prob lems in attack, while Gillibrand often pushed forward on the other flank to good effect. Outstanding in defence were
Tony Eyles and Paul Brether- ton, who did not put a foot wrong all afternoon. The previous day’s perform
ance was a complete contrast, with plavers lacking commit ment ana sharpness in front of goal — possibly because of a four-week lay-off due to bad weather. This game was trans ferred to Shawbridge as the Ashton ground was water-

Grindleton 2, Royal Oak 4
IN very pleasant condi tions Royal Oak emerged as worthy winners against lowly placed Grindleton.
The first half belonged en
tirely to the visitors whose con stant attacking was rewarded with goals from Wood and Conti. The second half was a much
more even affair with Cowking pulling one back for Grindleton early on. Oak scored again shortly af
terwards through Johnson but Cowking put Grindleton back into the game and they con tinued to press hard only to be thwarted when they conceded a penalty in the dying minutes. McCafly converted. Grindleton: Illingworth,
Jones, S. Turner, P. Turner, Read, Powell, Proctor, Dug- dale, Parkinson, Cowking, Pritt. Sub: Blackledge.
Both sides scored in
each half, Chatburn taking command at first and going into an early lead through Pe te r Czapowski who beat goal keeper Kevin Wright to a high cross and headed the ball in. ’ John Fletcher was a tower of
strength in midfield but Whal ley began to string some fine moves together and Paul Shorsman put them level, bv heading. a goal from a well- flighted free kick. Whalley ended the half on
top. They continued to play well after the break and Cnat- bum were rather fortunate to regain the lead, Czapowski again being on hand, to force home a deep cross from Tony. Smithson.
Banned Chatburn player’s appeal is dismissed
AN unsportsmanlike shouting incident during Chatburn’s away match with Chipping in November has resulted in the- villagers’ midfield player Malcolm Robinson being suspended for the re mainder of the season. The incident involved referee Garth Sutcliffe
and happened after Robinson had been substi tuted following his being booked. Chatburn appealed against the suspension but it has been upheld by the LFA.
Chatburn are in the running for the champion ship o f the first two divi sions of the Ribble Valley League and the loss of
Robinson must be a sad blow for them. By scoring four goals
clear their lines and gave Moly- neaux the chance to hammer a 15-yard low shot past Under wood. Constant bombardment failed
to produce an equaliser, with Ashton scoring a "killer” second goal on the hour to demoralise Clitheroe. A cross from Aspinall on the
right gave Robinson the time to leave Underwood stranded before stroking the ball into an empty net. Not even the appearance of
piay-manager Keith Newton soon afterwards could inspire Clitheroe to launch a successful late rally. The chances, were created,
for Lord Nelson CPV against Ribchester Re serves on Saturday S. Pearson took over from Victoria’s D. Astin as leading goalscorer in all three divisions. Astin had scored a hat-trick against Sabden to bring his tally to 15 compared with Pear son’s 18. Other top scorers are:
Division One: G. Young (Chatburn) 14 and A. Hargreaves (Chatburn) 12.

games was: Underwood, N. Whiteside, Richards, Brether- ton, Ashcroft, Eyles, Wadding- ton, McGuire, Wilcox, Gillib rand, R. Walker, S. Whiteside, Jim T a y lo r , A sh w o r th , Newton.

Ladies’ hockey
CLITHEROE Ladies’ Hockey 1st XI played Chorley at home on Saturday with a much weakened team, five of their regular players being missing. This showed in the first half
when they were very disorgan ised and Chorley had most of the play. Yet Clitheroe managed to
concede only one goal and should have scored from an attack with only the goalkeeper to beat. But in the second half
Clitheroe played much more as a team as players settled down and they had many more attacks. Clare Mortimer on the right
wing and Ceri Bradshaw both worked hard and were finally rewarded when Anne Hutchin son scored from a comer. But all this effort was to no
avail when Chorley put a bril liant through ball to their right wing, leaving her with only the goalie to beat. She scored with a fine shot, giving Chorley a 2- 1 victory. •

CPV controlled this Ribble Valley League, Di vision Three, game from the start and with a little more finishing power they could have gone well into double figures. The pitch was soft and both
teams took time to settle. CPV took the lead through Warden and added two more goals through Pearson (S) before Shorrock pulled one back for the visitors. Pearson went on to complete
a hat-trick and after the break the side relaxed the pace, al lowing Keys more freedom to attack. However, CPV still squandered many chances until Bishop and Pearson took their total to six. Man of the match was un

Sabden 2, Victoria 4
ALL the scoring in this Ribble Valley League, Di vision One, game came in the second half with Vic toria going four goals clear before Sabden re plied in the closing stages.
David Astin scored a hat-
trick for the visitors to bring his season’s total to 15 and make him the league’s leading marksman. Jimmy Coleboume scored the other.
Victoria had several other
good chances, in particular Steve Tomlinson and Peter Stirzaker saw their shots go wide of the target.
The defence was sound and
Mick Isherwood and Paul Wright were always in com mand of their territory.

Rimington Res 3, West Bradford Res 3
IN a game played in per fect conditions, West Bradford turned round with a clear two-goal lead against the run of play. Mellin and Blenkinship were the scorers.
Despite fine efforts by
Taylor and Graham the nearest Rimington came to getting a goal was when Ainsworth, the vis itors’ full back, hit his own post after a succes
sion of corners. Rimington put on
pressure after the break and were duly rewarded with goals from Graham and Taylor after good work by Hartley (J) and Pratt respectively.
The game then entered
a quiet phase which ended when Rimington’s mid- field man Holgate put Graham through to score. Unhappily, a bad back pass resulted in Mawdsley being allowed to put the visitors on terms.

CHATBURN Reserves and Whalley proved to be evenly matched, the visitors going home with a well-earned point.' ,
However, the visitors were
not to be thwarted and promp ted by Doug Russell they scored the equaliser with 15 minutes to go. Chatburn had had several
chances to clear and their fai lure to do so gave Neil Osliffe his chance. Chatburn went in search of a
winning goal but suffered from frustration. Some chances were
missed and, in particular, they failed to benefit from several comers. Les Allen played a cool role
in the Whalley defence and Gary Wilkinson had an out standing game. S ev e ra l Chatburn men
