For the police, Mr

Peter Tidey said that it was felt there should be the usual clear three-hour break in the afternoon, so as not to encourage people to drink all day.

The justices also re

fused applications for spe cial orders of exemption on six other days, many of them Saturdays preced ing bank holidays. Those turned down were April 16th, April 18th, May 2nd, May 24th, August 29th and January 2nd.

PERMISSION has been granted by the Ribble Valley Council’s Develop ment Sub-Committee for a porch and internal alter- ations to Greenfield

House, Back Lane, Grind- leton.

FOR these ■ members of the 1st Langho Guide company, it was out with' the walking boots on Good Friday for a seven-mile ramble from Downham to Barley and back by way of Pendle Bridge.

It was a hard but re

warding pull for the girls who were accompanied by Guider Mrs B. Cooper (on the right).

The village’s 2nd Guide

company, however, was determined not to be ac cused of taking things easy and took part in a walk arranged by Ranger Carol Hargreaves, who plotted an eight-mile course from Langho to Great Harwood and back to Spring Wood. Guider Mrs L. Hargreaves was in charge of the party.

Council warns slow payers

THE Ribble Valley Council’s legal department is having a blitz on slow payers buying their homes on the showpiece Riverside estate at Low Moor.

Conditional discharge

APPEARING on deferred sentence at Preston Crown Court on two cases of criminal damage by

breaking windows at TV-hire firm’s premises and the Department of Health and Social Securi ty office, in Clitheroe, Gil lian Darnell (19), Pee Park Avenue, Clitheroe, was given a conditional discharge for two years on condition that she undergoes psychiatric treatment.'

Judge William Open-

shaw told Darnell, an off- work nursing assistant, that she was lucky not to be sent away.

Easter test of endurance

' Ten people who' have council mortgages account for most of the arrears totalling £8,000. This, said Housing Committee chair man Coun. Fred Green (Wiltshire), was “disap pointing.” Announcing the blitz

Mr Jack Ruffley, Chief Legal Executive, said letters had been sent warning of likely prosecu tions. Coun. Tom Robinson

(Clitheroe) declared that there was perhaps mor need for'a blitz on tenants in arrears w'ith rent. At Riverside there was at least the security of the property. Mr Gordon Onslow

Borough Treasurer, had reported that rent owed by former council tenants now totalled £2,591 com pared with £1,731 at the end of December. All possible steps wer

being taken to recover this money but it was not easy. Coun. Mrs Beryl Cas

sidy (Clitheroe) wanted non-payers to be listed publicly at the council of fices but this idea v'as rejected as a dangerous step.

ANGLERS FINED

A MANCHESTER man who was said in court to be a bailiff for an angling club w’as fined £15 at Clitheroe for fishing the Ribble at Dinckley with an unlicensed rod. Kenneth Carlisle, of

SIX members and two leaders from Trinity Youth Centre, Clitheroe, survived an Easter test of endurance.

They are pictured before setting off for Win-

dermere, where they were left on Thursday evening to make it home under their own steam, equipped only with provi

sions and sleeping bags. Thankful for good

weather, though the nights were chilly, they arrived back in Clitheroe on Saturday night.

In the party were Philip Knight, Nicky

Slinger, Neil Winckley, Stuart Smith, Carl Stewart and Russell Men-

zies, accompanied by lead ers Dino Pozzi< and. . Dominico Lafranceschina.

Cotsw'old Drive, Royton pleaded guilty and in a letter said he was using two rods, but due to an oversight one of them was not licensed. He w'as or dered to pay £15 costs. For a similar offence at

Dinckley. Roy Laurence Mason, o f How’ son Avenue, Blackpool, was fined £15 with £15 costs. For fishing at Roches

ter without a licence, Michael Cookson, of Scot land Bank Terrace, Black burn, was fined £15 and a further £15 for not giving his name and address to a water bailiff. He was or dered to pay £15 costs. He told the court that

he had thought the length of river near the village was free and he panicked w'hen he saw' the bailiff.
