Farmers came to their help by taking milk to the road ends in emergency containers. The annual fatstock show at Clitheroe Auction

Mart was also affected. Although the standard was high, entries in cattle and sheep sections were down because farmers were unable to make the trip to town. Bad road conditions also

kept about half the stal lh o ld e r s away from C l i th e r o e ’s Tuesday market.

Complaints pour in

A CLITHEROE business man’s call for a quick solu tion to the problems caused by heavy vehicles has met with a good re sponse. Mr Trevor Balmforth,

owner of Stalwart Dyeing Company, says he has compiled a lengthy list of people with complaints

about lorries. In the Advertiser and

Times recently, Mr Balm forth outlined his plan to form a ratepayers’ action group to press the au thorities into protecting people from the “intoler able nuisance” of the lorries. He now intends to

“keep up the pressure” by drawing up a petition and continuing to lobby local bodies and councillors.

Footprints

THE Arctic conditions failed to deter thieves in Waddington on Sunday night. Goods and cash, total

value £700, were stolen from the village Social Club and £15 was taken from a till at West View Garage, run by parish council chairman Eric Ed mondson. The break-in at the

club was discovered on Monday morning by steward Mr Stephen Cox. His suspicions were aroused when he spotted footprints in the snow leading to the back of the building. The thieves smashed

THE early morning scene in King Street.

A busy time for thieves

WE wish you a crime- free Christmas and a securi ty-conscious New Year. That’s the message from Lanca shire Constabulary’s Crime Prevention Of ficers as crowds pour into the town centres for the annual pre- Christmas shopping spree.

Speakers’ Club

IN the chair for the meet ing of Clitheroe Speakers’ Club was Mr Chris Roberts. Speeches were given by Mr Stanley Blackburn, “Getting to know you”, and. Frank Nelson, “Fond memories”. Speech evaluat ions

were given by Dennis Ogden and Arthur Chap pell. A general evaluation

came from president Mr L io n e l P a t te r s o n . Timekeeper was Mr John Hunt, topics session chair man Mr Brian Allison and se s s ion evaluator .Mr Geoff Leaver.

Vin Shields, the county’s Crime Prevention Co-or dinator, urges everyone to take special precautions to ensure that thieves do not get a seasonal bonus. “This is a time for good will, but thieves are just as busy as ever looking for opportunities for per sonal gain — regardless of the misery caused to others,” he said. “Police will be out in

on a shop counter or the seat of a bus, even for a moment. Extra cash should not

be kept at home either, unless you want to give the -burglar a Christmas tip. Keep all surplus money in the bank, post offices or building society until it is required. Car owners who find it

convenient to use their vehicles while out shop ping should remember to put their parcels out of sight in the boot — and make sure that it is locked. Shopkeepers and busi

ness people are reminded to take particular care

. when carrying cash to and from the bank. Please vary the routes and times and try to be accompanied by another adult. ' Mr Shields added some

the shopping centres with the crowds and we shall do everything we can to catch the thieves, but the public can help as well by doing more .to protect their valuables.” Mr Shields offered this

advice: Bulging wallets -and

purses are a temptation to the thief, so never carry more cash with you than you really need. Keep: your . purse or .wallet in -a safe place —

Leaving a house at night with all the lights off and the gates wide open pre sen ts an ir r e s is t ib le temptation to the ..would- be burglar,” he said. “Similarly, people leav ing : their home empty at
