reasons behind his final choice, which saw Wad dington take the champion prize, Whalley emerge the winner in the large village class and Wiswell finish a close second in the small village category — just as he had done the'previous evening on his BBC TV programme “ Home Ground.” The half-hour program
me featured filmed pro files by reporter Frank Mellor of the six villages- which reached the final stages followed by Mi- Redhead’s assessment of the outstanding qualities of each. Waddington, described
by Mr - Mellor as “the vil lage that has launched a- thousand calendars,”- nar rowly beat-Great Eccles- ton to the champion prize because, according to .Mi- Redhead, “everything about the village sug gested care.” ; “The two villages in the champion class were cer tainly the hardest to sepa rate and at one stage I was tempted to make them joint winners,” said Mr Redhead. “But that would have been chicken and after having another

Farm Caravan Site, Bilj; lington, and - the Corona:
tion Gardens, Wiswell.. • Whalley, described by'
Mr Mellor as “a village of great character .which de spite the traffic manages to retain its charm and rural scale,” was chosen by Mr Redhead as the winner of the large village section because “around e v e r y : co rn e r th e r e seemed to be something to lift the heart. • “I had been to Whalley before and always knew it as a tidy place which looked better and better over the years,” he said. “It is very well kept and has the right combination of care and flair.”

highly commended certifi cates for the Abbotsway play area and Maureen Cookson’s shop. - Mr Redhead readily ad mitted that; as far as the small villages were con cerned, ,)Wiswell was much more beautiful than its ultimately successful rival, Little Eccleston. “I have never been to
Wiswell before . and the first thing that struck me when I arrived was that "it was clearly much loved by the residents,” he said. “Almost "every house and cottage was well kept and the village would adorn any calendar. “But one tatty field from an untidy farm in
i the heart of the village came into the judging area and it was just a tip. Clearly the owner is not interested in winning competitions and unfortu nately because of that I chose Wiswell as runner- up.” Other successful Ribble
Valley, entrants gaining prizes in Saturday’s cere mony were the Horrock- sford Lime Company Chatburn, winner of the industrial/commercial site section, and St Barth olomew’s Church, Chip ping, highly commended in the places of worship and grounds category. Welcoming, the gather

Walmsley said: “It was a very good show all round and every one can be proud of their efforts and all the obvious hard work that went into keeping the villages tidy.” Mr Redhead congratu
