THE son of a former Mayor of Clitheroe, Mr Alan Whiteside Rushton, of Hawthorne Place, Clitheroe, has died at the age of 71. Mr Rushton was
master printer and, with his father, had been a di rector of the family’s former business — The Borough Printing Com pany which for 40 years published the Borough Record. The family has close
links with Clitheroe Parish Church where Mr Rushton followed in his father’s footsteps by being a bellringer for 25 years. He had also been a hand bell ringer and was one of the original team that ac companied the .hymn-sing- ing in the Trough of Bow- land in the 1930s. The Parish Church rin
gers paid tribute to him by ringing a quarter peel on Sunday evening. , The ringers were also represented at Monday’s funeral service, conducted by Canon John Hudson. Mr Rushton leaves

Good response to campaign for disabled
LOCAL organisations turned out in force on Monday night to support a call from the Ribble Valley Committee for the International Year of Disabled People to give assistance in running money-raising and other events. So many representa
tives turned up at Whal ley Old Grammar School that the meeting twice had to be transferred to larger rooms. “We expected about six
called to stimulate inter est and get things off the ground. If the response is anything to go by, then Ribble Valley should have a campaign of which to be proud.” Coun. Fell said one im
mediate effect of the meeting is that Whalley Lions are to consider staging a major event with a top-name personal ity attending. For younger disabled
people, the North West Scouts may prepare a summer camp for about 150 at Bowley, Great Harwood. The committee wants
lists of self-service petrol stations prepared to give assistance to disabled people, volunteers willing to provide transport and taxi firms which have
vehicles able to accommo date people with wheel chairs. One surprising fact to
emerge from the meeting was that there are 1,100 registered disabled people in the Ribble Valley, but the total could be far gre ater through failure to re gister.

CLITHEROE motorist Dennis Duckenfield (46), of Chatburn Park Drive, was fined £20 and ordered to pay £5 costs by the town’s magistrates when he pleaded guilty by letter to leaving his car unattended in Pendle Road, Clitheroe, with the engine running.

Recalling
childhood A DIFFERENT kind of “scrumping” is recalled by a former Bolton-by-Bow- land man now living in sunny Spain. Mr “Sonny” Wadding
ton has written to us re calling the memorable days in the late 1920s when he and a bunch of his pals used to steal into farmers’ fodder sheds and scrump locust beans, as well as the usual apples and oranges. Sonny, now of Felanitx, Mallorca, says that the “harmless adventure” was great fun and very re warding because the beans, bought by local farmers to enrich cattle food, were very sweet and toffee-like. “Our adventures took
place mostly on Saturdays during the years 1927,' 1928 and 1929,” recalled Sonny, now 65. “In those days children found money was in short supply and we had to
make our own fun and games. “Today, here in Spain, I
see thousands of tons of those same locust beans rotting on our land. Appa rently farmers find it is nof worth picking them because of the low price they bring. “Oranges and lemons
are sadly left to’rot, while British shoppers continue to pay high prices for them. “Needless to say, I still
enjoy scrumping, but these days, I stick to oranges and certainly only with the consent of the farmers.”
Faulty tyre
A CLITHEROE motorist was fined £50 and ordered to pay £5 costs by the town's magistrates when he pleaded guilty by letter to driving a van in Eshton Terrace with a de fective rear offside tyre. John David Norman
(18), of Alma Place, said in mitigation that poor tracking had subjected
the tyre to excessive wear.
