More join waste paper
round
lality) Iwlth every
ITS
THERE has been a good response to the appeal for waste paper by Clitheroe Old People’s Welfare Committee.
Already the aim of
doubling the weekly col lection to more than three tons has been achieved and an organised network of collectors in Clitheroe could soon be in opera tion.
With the Pendle Club’s
maintenance and repair costs this year likely to result in a £1,000 deficit, the committee wanted to double the collection to offset this.
Chairman Mr Brian ITS
In Queen, leer
MTS
Haig believed the best way to do this was for residents in individual s tr e e ts in Clitheroe, Whalley and surrounding villages to organise their own collection.
After a meeting of rep
resentatives from all the major voluntary groups in the area, Mr Haig is hopeful of soon being able to nominate collectors.
He said the committee
was very grateful for the increase in waste paper and to those who had come forward for col lecting.
He added, though, that
kEES, |S and
more volunteers would still be welcome and they should contact him at Clitheroe 24049.
Club must reapply for grant
RIBBLESDALE Wan derers Cricket and Bowl ing Club will have to make a fresh application if they require grant aid from Clitheroe Town Council, it was decided at last week’s meeting.
The Church Meadow
club wrote to the council asking if it was possible to receive the £200 which had been granted to the now dissolved Ribblesdale Park amalgamation in February.
Although Wanderers
were a part of that amal gamation, councillors felt that the change of cir cumstances meant that the club had no automatic right to the money.
Town Clerk Mr James
Orrell said that the dissol ution of the amalgamation meant that the council had no legal requirement to pay the money.
Mayor joins school ringing 1 1
Just an average month of June
JUNE in the Ribble Valley wasn’t of the “flaming” variety, with rain falling on all but nine days of the month and temperatuies reaching 70 deg. F on only three occasions.
According to figures re- middle of the nine day dry
corded a“t Chatburn weather station by village school headmaster Mr Ted Boden, there was 3.27in. of rain during the month, a figure surprisingly simi lar to records for the cor responding period over the last four years. In June of each year
from 1977, a similar rain fall total was recorded, but there, were more dry days. This year’s figure of
nine days without rain, however, is exactly the same as last year. Heaviest rainfall in the
Ribble Valley last month was on the 2nd (0.39in.), while maximum tem peratures ranged from 58
deg. F to 70 deg. F. Brightest days were the 21st and 22nd — the

Clitheroe opposes boundary change
CLITHEROE Town Council has given an em phatic “thumbs down” to the attempt by Simonstone to become part of the Ribble
Valley. The Boundary Commis
sion asked town council lors for their comments following the village’s re quest to leave the more ui-ban Burnley area seven years after local govern ment reorganisation. Coun. Bert Jones was
adamant that Simonstone should stay where it is. “These outlying places have no real connection with the Ribble Valley,” he said. “I fail to see why we
should support their at tempt to have the bound ary moved. In fact, I would be quite happy to see Read go as well.” Coun. Peter Nuttall
said it was simply a matter of a village in an urban area wanting to
“get in on” a rural district with its lower rates and other advantages. Coun. Leo Wells added
that such a change would bring many problems, not least the transporting of sch o o lch i ld r en from Simonstone to Clitheroe along the already very busy A671.

FOR exceeding the speed limit with a motor vehicle in Main Street, Gisburn, Derek Aspden (49), of L a n g s h a w D r iv e , Clitheroe, was fined £25 with £5 costs by the tow n ’s m a g is tr a t e s . Aspden was timed at 45 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone.
