Victory bid fails

CLITHEROE’S brave victory bid in Saturday’s Ribblesdale League match at Padiham came to no thing as their tailenders were shot out by the home side’s attack. Pacing a target of 165, Clitheroe kept up with

the asking rate thanks to some hard hitting by Simon Westhead. When the Chatburn

missed, there was little resistance from the rest and the final four wickets tumbled for a . mere nine runs as Folley and Gee polished things off. Pro fe ssiona l Brian

Great Harwood 131 for 8, Whalley 181 for 7

WHALLEY- were beaten by the clock in their ef

forts to hustle out Great Harwood and force a win in Saturday’s Ribblesdale League clash at Cliffe Park. They took three points

from a winning draw but came close to making it five as Harwood’s tail were forced to hang on after a batting collapse. The highlight of Whal-

ley’s performance was a sparkling innings by skip per John Slinger, who looked all set to reach his century until he was run out by a great piece of fielding. The pitch was dry with a fair amount of bounce in

his. mark by cracking 17 runs off just eight balls. When Harwood batted

it and Whalley recovered from the early setback of losing professional Steve1 Lawton in the fifth over with some sound contribu tions from the middle order. David Bleazard made

they seemed to be sailing along but were rocked by Jim Staniforth’s second spell in which he captured four wickets for only 12 runs. The three-p ronged

attack worked hard to finish the job but ran out

Whalley routed

Poynton 181 for 9, Whalley 102

ANY hopes that Whalley had for success in the Greenall Whitley Lanca shire Cup were well and truly shattered with a 79- run defeat in theft- first

round match at Poynton. Several Poynton batsmen

chipjied in with useful scores. Mendis leading the way with a fine 46, which included eight boundaries. The Whalley attack stuck to

Church Meadow club a target of 187 which they had reached in 36 overs for an average run-rate of 5.19 an over.

This total was not as

high as might have been expected considering that the openers put on 106. However, subsequent batsmen encountered some tight bowling and wickets were lost in ef forts to push the score along.

Wanderers lost Neil Duck

worth within a very, short time as the result of a good catch near the boundary edge, the first of Cooper’s five victims. David Cottam became the

under intense pressure and did the trick to gain Read’s second five-point haul of the season.

It is the second week

running^ that Grainger has been Read’s hero in a close contest, following his match-saving knock against Clitheroe.

Settle took first use of

the track and their open ers made a brisk start against R ea d ’ s pace bowlers.

The run rate slowed

however when the spin ners were brought on, with Richard Goodway soon arnong the wickets.

next, with 65 on the board. This brought in Billy Lamb to partner Dennett who was in an

attacking mood and bidding fair to put nis side in a winning

position. He and Lamb had been to

gether little more than half an hour when the professional was run-out within reach of his 50. In fact, he scored 41 off 32 balls, taking 22 off Goodall in one over by way of five bound aries, four of those in succes sion. It was • the first time that

Dennett had really got going with the bat this season and he was having a field day against some untidy bowling. Lamb batted through the in nings for a well-struck 50, in-

eluding a six and it was fitting that Holgate should be his last

partner and also unbeaten. Wanderers had four overs

left and three wickets in hand when they passed Cherry Tree’s overs-rate, a state of play where some clubs might nave put up the shutters. How ever, they chose to go for runs right to tne end. Some good catches were

taken in this match — nine all, told, of which Duckworth Held three. Wanderers’ overs-rate was .

Sharp snatches seven wickets

Clitheroe 2nd 86, Old Rossendalians 77

FINE bowling by the Clitheroe attack . earned them an unlikely victory after their batting had earlier fallen away in this Division One clash. Leading the fight was Robin

Sharp who captured seven Ros- sendale wickets and he was well backed by Tim Bleazard and Charles Bishop.

The Clitheroe fielding was excellent with eight catches

• held, some of them breathtak ing efforts. Earlier, Clitheroe had their

problems on -the-'Chatburn Road track and struggled for

.runs. Wickets tumbled at regu lar intervals and it needed -

Gordon Dixon and Alan Hen derson to give some backbone to the innings.

The Yorkshiremen were

probably a little disap pointed at their total but Read’s spinners had done a good job on a pitch that posed some problems for the batsmen.

Read soon hit trouble in their

reply, losing Morgan with the score on seven. Grainger and Rigby made comfortable prog ress before Rigby fell for 37. When James and Kawalec went

CLITHEROE FC’s annual dinner gave the club the chance to show off the fruit of this season’s success — the glittering Lancashire Combina tion champions’ trophy. The event was held at the Castle Restaurant

and nearly 100 players, officials and guests saw club chairman Mr Cyril Whiteside receive the silverware from Mr Jim Kenyon, secretary of the Lancashire Football Association. Main speaker was Mr Jack Campbell, former

Blackburn Rovers’ coach,' and other guests included Mr Ken Adcroft, Blackburn combina tion secretary, and Mr Eddie Richards, a Blackburn Rovers’ scout. The first team playcr-of-the-year award, de

cided by a ballot among players and officials, went to goalkeeper Denis Underwood, ever present in this season's title winning outfit. The reserve team honour went to promising

front-runner Jim Taylor. Sportsman of the year was first team full-back Tony Eyles. Special presentations were made to secretary

Mr Colin Wilson, who was given a set of pens by the club committee and Mr Keith Lord, players’ attendant, who accepted a tankard from the first and second team squads. Tankards were also presented to manager Mr

Dave Morris and bingo programme organiser Mr Brian Ormerod. A further award was made to Mr Peter

Chatburn, managing director of Cam-Era, the club’s sponsors. He received a gift of an en graved whisky flask. And the ladies who helped out at the Shaw-

bridge canteen during the season were not forgotten either. Mrs Ann Calvert, Mrs Mar garet Eyles and Mrs Peggy Lord all received bouquets. Our picture shows Mr Whiteside (centre,

right) receiving the champions’ trophy from Mr Kenyon, with a group of players, officials and committee members looking on.
