Discussion on new ' hymn book

THE • contents of the proposed new Methodist hymn book will be discus sed at a special meeting at T r in ity Methodist Church, Clitheroe, next Wednesday. The meeting has' been

called because of the in terest shown by local churches in the outline proposals for the new hymn book, due to be published in 1983. Com ments will be forwarded to the national committee. A service to celebrate 200 years since publica-

/ tion of the first Methodist hymn book was recently conducted at Trinity by the minister, the Rev. James Needham. The choir led the sing

ing of Wesley hymns and Mr Arthur Jones was or-

• ganist. Mr Jones is help ing to plan a spring ser vice of hymns and tunes by local composers and will \ be glad to receive further contributions.

- Pendle House’s applica

tion to build the homes bn the. site between Albion Street arid Waterloo: Road has been approved by the Ribble Valley Council’s Development Sub-commit tee.- Although the council re

ceived no objection^ to the scheme, Clitheroe Town Council, when con sulted on the plan, did express the hope that the development would be de signed with both the first time buyer and the elder ly in mind. The site has been clear

for some months and, ear lier this year, the Ribble Valley Council advertised it in a bid to find the most suitable applicant and the best price.

Preparing for more flooding

WHALLEY. Parish Coun cil is demanding precau tions to reduce to a minimum the effect o'f any fu tu r e f lo o d in g th e village. It decided to ask Lanca-:

shire County Council to allocate flood warning signs for use in Whalley only. Councillors also want more police drafted into the area so that vehi cles can be diverted from the town centre. In last month’s torren-'

tial rain, a stream over flowed a culvert opposite Mitton Road and flowed down King Street. ' Speeding vehicles cre

ated “bow waves” which splashed over sandbagged

■front doors and flooded homes. Council, clerk Mr Jim

Holden' said that only one policeman :was on duty at the Clitheroe end of the town to turn vehicles back to the bypass. ■When the county was

asked for warning s i^ s , it was discovered that they had all been issued to other areas. ''
