the excitement of the FA Cup Final, Henth orn and Ribblesdale managed to conjure up a dramatic finish of their own.

Wembley and the desina- tion of this season’s Aitken Shield was not decided until, with dusk closing in, Ribbl e sda l e ’s George Smith did the trick. It means the trophy has a new “home,” for Smith’s goal wrested it from Henthorn, the previous holders.

Shawbridge was their

time to settle down before they saw Ribblesdale go one up. Trevor Pinch latched onto the ball in Henthorn's box, ghosted by a couple of defenders and slipped it past John Walker.

A good crowd had hardly

into retaliation and they had the better of the rest of the half. They drew level after 30 minutes, when Tony Bush and Steve Conti combined to create an opening for Dave Dracnenburg, who made no mistake- Mick O’Neill was at that stage the busier of the two goalkeep ers but Henthorn could not quite edge in front.

This stung Henthorn

they could have sewn it up after the break. A solo run by Pinch from the centre ci rcle was foi led by Walker, who also touched a fierce drive from Eddie Preedy over the bar.

Kibblesdale hit back and

by, tension mounted with the teams realising one goal could clinch it. Normal time ended with Henthorn surviving a couple of goal mouth scrambles to battle on. The pace never slac kened as both sides tore into each other again in extra-time.

As the minutes ticked

minutes left when Smith struck. Pinch chipped the ball into space, Smith took it across the area, rounded Walker , and joyful ly tucked it home before turning to be mobbed by his team mates.

There were only 11

tern had gone, and when a Bush corner was cleared it was their last throw. All three Ribble Valley cup finals this season have gone into extra time. And Ribblesdale’s t r iumph means they are on course for a cup double because tomorrow night they meet Chatburn in the replay of the Ashley Smith Trophy.

CLITHEROE came within seconds of defeat in their home game with Baxenden, who went away with three points for a winning draw and the feeling that they had won a moral victory. There was also a feeling that they had not been robbed by the clock but rather by gamesmanship.

Cherry Tree S3 for S, Kihhlesdale \V 144

TAKING a philosophical look after their Cherry Tree game, Ribblesdale Wanderers came to the conclusion that three points from a drawn game is becoming a distinct possibility. disastrous start, quickly arriving at 23 for four. Ken Proctor and Tom Wallbank applied the brake, and then Proctor and Alec Hol- gate consolidated with a stand of 90. Survival had been the motive, which meant that concentration on run-rate alone was very much of secondary import ance. Wanderers still man

received its reward, they would have fared better than one point against Cherry Tree’s three. Put in to bat they made a

all the way against some good bowling by Dennett and Bill Slinger and they looked hardly likely to achieve victory. But when the last over was reached they needed nine runs to claim three points for a winning draw. Dennet t was tn e bowler and Woodhead hit his first delivery for six, a total of 10 runs being taken. So Cherry Tree finished with an average of 3.95, having received 21 overs.
