base at Philmont, the party set off on a 10-day hike under the supervision of an American guide. Some of the places where they pitched camp — Apache Springs, Cypher’s Mine, Buck Creek and Toothache Springs — sounded as though they had come straight from a John .Wayne movie. “ It was really tough
going,” said Mr Snape. “The heat was intense and we had breathing problems because of the high altitude. It also took some time to adapt to living off dehydrated food packs.” The Scouts were able to try their hand at various
