Council may re-think on

BIGGER discounts for wishing to buy their own tonight by Ribble Valley

mittee. The council already gives - up to 20% discount on cur rent market values; But since the Government announced its intention Yo

■ bring in legislation which will force councils to give much larger discounts the sale of council houses loc ally has dried up.

The Government has told local authorities they

can adopt the new dis counts s tra igh taw a y

before legislation making them obligatory is intro duced.

But Ribble Valley Coun ■ 1

cil’s Policy and Resources Committee has come out against the proposals until they are in the statute

book. Tonight, in view of the

fact that no council houses have been sold recently in

Ribble Valley, the Housing Committee may decide it is a matter of urgency for the council to re-think its pol icy on discounts. It is certain, however,

that some councillors will still be opposed to granting

Cheeky thief

A CHEEKY thief walked into Waterloo Timber Saw mill, Waterloo Road, Clitheroe, and stole £20 from the till while the owner was busy serving a customer. Clitheroe police are

investigating. P rim a ry : C e r t i f ica t e — council bouse tenants

houses will be discussed Council’s Housing Com-

larger discounts before the

Govemment.makes it com pulsory. ' The Housing Committee chairman, Coun. Harry

Riding, said: “Tenants are holding back from buy ing at the moment. The sooner we make a definite decision the better.”

The council’s present

discount scheme on the sale of council houses was introduced in November 1976. After five years as a sitting tenant a buyer is eligible for a 10% discount. The discount rises by 2% for every year over five, up to a maximum of 20%.

scheme, which could be on the statute book before

T h e G o v e rnm e n t

the end of the year, gives more generous discounts. A tenant of less than

three years will receive 30%, a tenant of three years 33V&%, and a man who has been in his council house four year will have a 34% discount. After this the rate rises 1% a year to a maximum of 50%. So a tenant who has paid

rent for 20 years will be able to buy his house for

half its market value. The council does not sell

certain property. Bun galows, flats, sheltered accommodation and houses of a certain pattern such as those at Tower Hill, Clitheroe, are not available for purchase. To stop buyers pro

fiteering there is a clause in the council’s sale agree ments which allows the council to buy back a house from the tenant at the same price he paid for it if he wishes to sell within five years of purchase.

Licensing sessions

RIBBLE Valley Licensing Justices granted an appli cation for a music, singing and dancing licence for Friday evenings at the C a s t le R e s ta u r a n t , Clitheroe. Permission was also

given for structual altera tions at Hillock House Restaurant, Hillock Farm, Old Langho. The intention is to convert an adjoining barn into a lounge-bar and provide extra toilets. The Bench granted an

application for a special certificate, extended hours

tices on and off-licence and a special hours certificate fo r the Wicked Fox Restaurant, Billington,

was adjourned until Sep tember 6th.
