LANGHO charge nurse Mr Arthur Bithell, who this week retired from Brockhall Hospital after 32 years, is not going to relax and take it easy. .
For in two months’ time,
he and his wife, Sylvia, will be heading for a new home in the wide open spaces of Australia. For Mrs Bithell, it will
be a lifelong ambition achieved, fo r she has always wanted to return to the land of kangaroos and koala bears where she was b o r n . She has few memories of the country, however, having come to England when she was three. The couple, both 62, of
Larkhill Cottages, are greatly looking forward to seeing their family again, for they will be joining their son and daughter out there. Larry (39), a nursing
tutor, emigrated to Colac, near Melbourne, fouryears ago. Valerie (32), a junior nursing sister, settled in Bundoora, 88 miles away, just nine months ago. Larry has three children
and Valerie two. Mr and Mrs Bithell’s
younger son, Arthur (21), who lives with his parents, has not yet decided if he will be emigrating with them. The couple are both excited at the prospect of
round & about
making a new life in Australia, but will miss their work.
Mr Bithell is leaving his
job with mixed feelings, for he will miss the many friends he has made during his 32 years at the hospital. At a retirement party he was given a digital clock and an onyx table lighter, and Mrs Bithell was pre sented with a huge bou quet of flowers.
Before joining Broc
khall, Mr Bithell worked at Barrowford Print Works, where he met his wife. During the war he was a gunner in the Royal Artil lery.
Mrs Bithell, who has
been a dinner lady at St Mary’s RC School, Lan gho, for 17 years, retires at the end of next month. She has been a keen member of Billington and Langho WI, of which she is a founder member, and the hobbies she has followed while in the organisation have kept her occupied in her spare time.
Taking
the stage LANCASTER Footlights Club, winners of the pre mier award at the Ribble Valley Drama Festival this year with their production of Arden’s “Serjeant Mus- grave’s Dance,” have been awarded a place in the British “ All Winners” Invitation Festival to be staged in the Floral Hall, Fleetwood, on October 5th.
Also appearing in the
national finals are Studio One, Stoke-on-Trent, who w ere also among the Clitheroe prizewinners.
Members of the Execu
tive of the National Associ ation will meet in the town next month to finalise arrangements fo r the national finals at Clitheroe Civic Hall in September and October 1980.

TWO pairs of Lancashire clogs and two shaivls are urgently needed if Clitheroe is to show the flag at an international conference of Ladies’ Circles in Brus sels on August 22nd. At a reception on the first evening, representatives
will be wearing the national costumes of their country.
The British party has decided to wear county
costumes and Clitheroe representatives Mrs Susan Haig (Press officer) and Mrs Liz Parkinson (Area chairman) are looking for old Lancashire dress. With the other members of the Lancashire party

RECENTLY duties and pleasure (actually, the two have been synonymous) have taken me some dis tance from this Whal ley Window and as I have travelled the country, my curiosity has been aroused by the very unusual names of some of the towns and villages I have come across. Names are evocative '
things and when one meets a particularly curious one,
boldly painted upon a sign post or carved deeply in
some ancient milestone, all k in d s o f p i c t u r e s immediately begin to form in the mind. For instance, what could

freely make their home in a village named Wooden — who ' on earth would ever wish to be known as a
Wooden person — but the place exists, I assure you,
and you will find it clearly marked on your road map. And surely, to dwell in a
township called Dole could be both embarrassing and depressing, particularly if you happened to be one of my unfortunate contem poraries who stood in long queues outside the coun- t r y ’ s many La b o u r exchanges in the grim days of the late 20s and early 30s. * The clergyman fortu

remain very little altered today and, after all, we once had a Gingling Alley in our own village; the nar row passage down which travellers once led their n a g s f o r ’ s t a b l i n g immediately behind, the Whalley Arms. Finally, how would a home in Paradise Street
