Growth of camp site traced

EARLY days as Boy Scouts were recalled by many of the 66 Probus Club members who heard a talk by Mr A. W. Young, warden and camp leader of Bowley camp site and training centre, on its origin and development. Following the spoiling of

the former camp site at Huntroyde by the construc tion of the Nelson bypass in 1963-64, th e Scouting authorities bought a run down farmhouse and build ings with 47 acres of fields and woodlands on the bank of the Calder near Great Harwood.

facilities. Last year it catered for

almost 13,000 Scouts from Britain and overseas, includ ing parties of the handicap ped and under-privileged.

Thanks were expressed by Mr K en Williamso n (Clitheroe). Chairman Mr Tom Boylan

(Whalley) asked for volun teers to drive handicapped people to the Red Cross centre at Low Moor Church on specified dates. Anyone possessing a car and willing to help should contact Mr Ernest Ayre, Bolton-by- Bowland. Members willing to help
