Strike damages
kilns KILNS at the Clitheroe Ribblesdale Cement plant were found to be damaged after a 32-hour strike by process workers and mem bers of craft unions. The strike by 370 workers which began last Thursday was in support of a national pay claim. Kilns at the works are normally kept heated, but a spokesman for the firm said they had cooled during the strike and had then been reheated. The “ thermal shock” had damaged the kiln

Brown Bunnies aim for Whalley
TWELVE servicemen from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, at Mons, Belgium, have a mission next week — to reach the Swan Hotel, Whalley. They are coming for a
four-day reunion starting on Friday at the invitation of Swan regular Mr Tom Brown, who served with SHAPE as a W a r ra n t Officer (Yeoman of Signals) until last month. The men, nicknamed “The
Brown Bunnies,” have forged a life-long bond of friendship and vowed to stay in touch wherever they might be in the world. The 12 visitors from Mons
— eight Americans and four Britons — are warrant offic ers and senior NCOs in the United States Air Force and Navy, the Royal Navy and Air Force and the British Army. Most of the Americans
have not served in the UK although one, CPO Charles Swain, of the US Navy, has been stationed at Holy Loch, Scotland. Another member of the

indoors if it rains, but the group has not yet decided on an alternative venue. The traditional Clitheroe
holiday fortnight starts on Saturday, July 15th, and the Players are planning their production for July 12th to 15th, though they have not yet finalised the arrange ments. Producer Mrs Margaret
Smith sees the Shakespeare play as “an ideal holiday show.” “It is an enjoyable comedy
and the Castle se ttin g should be ideal,” she said. “I think people could treat the production as an opener to the holidays.” The Parish Church Play
ers usually give one produc tion a year during Holy Week, but they now want to add at least one further pro duction a year to their prog

and Gladys Sutcliffe will take the parts of Theseus and Hippolyta and the role of Bottom will be played by Brian McDonald, whose wife Valerie is making the cos tumes.
