Friday, March 18th, 1977 featuring
The Jolly Folk Group from Blackpool, commencing 8-15 p.m.
:-------------- , A meeting held at the home o f County chairman Mrs ' Sheila Maw, Lower q » k Hill
Farm, was devoted entirely to the question of road safety, after a recent accident at Padiham in which a young
rider died. Mrs Maw told the Adver
tiser and Times that the soci ety was campaigning to make it law for all nders to wear hard hats. Members had been stopping riders not wearing hats, to point out the dangers, but in many cases they were
met with abuse. I t was important that
horses should be properly saddled and bridled, and that children received the neces sary riding instruction before going on the roads, she added. Many youngsters lacked the knowledge m how to cope if a pony panicked in traffic. Mrs Maw stressed the
importance of having the co o p e ra t ion o f motorists, particularly wagon drivers, in taking more care when over
taking riders. Another safety precaution
would be to reopen more bridleways to keep riders off the roads, but that depended mainly on the co-operation of local farmers. A clinic for young riders is
being held in Buniley in a fortnight, when advice will be given on the problems of training and feeding horses. Lectures on riding safety on
the roads are at present in full swing at Mrs Maw’s home and at ■ Wilpshire, and over the Easter holidays 42 children will be taking a test on the subject.
