■MEMORIES OF THE COACHING DAYS-
BACK in the first half of the 19th century nothing could have been further from the minds of people using the Swan Courtyard than that the place would later become a shopping centre.
The yard was, during that
time, a terminus o f the c o a ch service tha t ran between the Swan and Royal and the Old Bull at Black burn.
The Swan itse lf was. a
staging post where travellers would stop for a meal, or-
overnight, as they awaited coaches to take them on to Skipton, or in the other d i r e c t i o n t o P r e s t o n , Haslingden, Manchester, or . back to Blackburn.
The courtyard frequently
echoed to the clip<lop of horses’ hooves, the rattle of the coach over the stones, and the creak of the livery as coaches pulled in and out. The yard was one o f
several Clitheroe inns which served the treble purpose of stabling, coach hou s ing and farmyard. E v i d e n c e o f t h i s link
between ho s t e l r ie s and a g r i c u l t u r e in the town persists today down Kirk- moor Road, where one of the
■ f ields is still called Swan Field.
Fierce competition raged
between the Swan coach — named “Victoria” — and other coaches running to and from Clitheroe. Amo n g the s tr o n g e s t
rivalry was that between the Swan and one of its former drivers, Hugh Goodbier, who later took the Black-Bull Inn and started an opposition coach, the “Live and let l i v e . ”
A y o u n g man named
Samue l Wi lk in son died during the years of competi tion when he jumped off one coach as it returned into Clitheroe through Salford. He was run over by another coach racing to reach the town first. The coaches were usually
accompanied by buglers — and the first one to reach Clitheroe would often strike up the air, •
'"Oh dear, whatcan the matter be,
‘ fJohnnie stays long at the air." The coming of the railway
to Clitheroe in 1850 sounded the death knell for coach passenger services, but old photographs taken as late as 1880 show the Swan still describing itself as a posting house.
And for many years after
the railway came, the Swan Courtyard remained a place from which gigs could be hired by prirate indmduals. Later the old stables were
used as garages — and now the latest twist in the long history of the yard has made it as smart as it ever was.
