on Saturday — the highest- away total in their history. It. was also the villager’s

biggest score since the 1970- 71 season. Hurst Green must, however, be satisfied with second place at present, top spot going to all-conquering Academicals; They defeated Henthorn 6-4, Henthorn's goals being the first that Academicals have conceded this season. • - . ■ Two other first division

sides, King’s Arms and Chat- burn, also maintained their unbeaten re co rd at the*, weekend. In the second divi sion, Calderstones continue to set the pace with West Brad ford, on equal points; the main threat at present.

Sabden rocked by Moon shot

Hurst Green Res 2, Sabden 2.

LEAGUE newcomers Sabden shaped like promotion material on Saturday, their forwards constantly stretching the home defence.

A goals famine

Lions 0, Grindlcton 0.

A MUCH-IMPROVED Lions side held Grindleton to a draw in a match in which each team had a goal disal

lowed. Lions had the better of the early

exchanges, Campbell netting after in minutes, that effort was disal

lowed and he had further ill-luck soon after, heading a good cross from Mann against the crossbar. Near the end of the half, Grindleton began to test goalkeeper O’Neill, Cowking having the bail taken off his foot as he seemed likely to score. A Horst goal for Grindleton was

disallowed after the restart and, as the game wore on, it became less likely that either side would score. Parkinson played soundly in goal for Grindleton while Clegg and Allen were the best for Lions. Lions: O'Neill, Murphy, Potter,

A hat-trick

from Birch Henthorn Utd 4,s

Clitheroe Academicals 6.

IN A--lively and fast-paced game, Henthorn looked the better side* in the first 15 minutes but could not turn their superiority into goals. Academicals were dangerous on

the break and Mullen put them ahead with a fine shot from outside the penalty area. Birch scored a second from Belton’s cross and Murphy and Hindmoor added one . each before the_interval. Henthorn, who had played well during the half, were unlucky.to be trailing so badly. Playing with the slope, they

looked* sharper after the restart and reduced the arrears with a fine goal from a free kick. Birch added a fifth before Henthorn again reduced the margin. Birch completed his hat- trick from the penalty spot. Henth orn came back yet again with a well- taken goal by Conti. Played in a sporting manner, the

match was always entertaining and was well controlled by referee P. Wrigley. The Conti brothers and Wild and Dyer played well for Henthorn, and. Birch and Mullen wore prominent for Academicals. Academicals: Grainger, Newby,

Barker, Houldsworth, Barcroft, Mullen, Hindmoor, Blacktop, Murphy, Birch, Belton.

Hurst Green Reserves were

lucky to make a draw against such a talented side and it was only hard work by Hughes, Holden, Wilkinson and goal keeper Hayhurst that* kept down'the score. Sabden had what would , have been the winner disallowed for offside in the final minutes.

H u r s t G r e e n m u s t ,

however, be credited with giving their opponents several problems. The Reserves’ goals were also taken better.

Bromley put Sabden one up

a fte r three minutes. The home side, marshalled by player-manager Wilkinson, fought hard. The forwards producing some excellent build-ups and the 'outcome was a peach of a goal from Moon, who scored with a first time shot from the edge of the box. A goalmouth scramble gave Sabden their second goal on the interval, the scorer being Balmbra.

With the slope in their favour, the

reserves had more of the second half. Their deserved equaliser came when Masters crossed in front of the Sabden goal. Three forwards took a suing and missed but Crotty made no mistake and put the ball just inside the post. Minutes later, Brom ley saved a certain goal when he

dived at the .feet of Masters. i

PLAYING with the advantage of the' slope and the strong wind, Read . Reserves went close several limes in the early stages of this second divi

sion game. Rushton hit the bar and Kitchen

had a powerful header athletically cleared of f the line by Evans. Academicals Reserves came more into the game after Green put Read ’ ahead with a close-range header. They conceded another goal just . before the interval Imwever, the referee over-ruling a linesmans offside decision. Scorer was again Green.

- Academicals enjoyed more posses

sion in t|ic second half but did not create any good chances. Heyworth scored with 15 minutes to go but Read held out to take the points. Kitchen and G. Bell caught the eye for Read while Thompson, Evans’ and Dilworth were the pick of an improving Academicals side.

Chipping crumble

Chipping 1, King’s Arms 6

EARLY threats by Chipping were, easily dealt* with by the confident King’s defence in this first division match.

* Rush put the pub side ahead with

a good shot after a goalmouth melee. A' header from Bob Peel increased . their lead .and a 20-yard drive by Smith made it 3-0 by half time. After the restart King's continued to attack, Pye being next to score. Chipping were hard put to it to prevent a huge score. Taylor made it five after a good run.

Proctor scored a consolation’ for

Chipping near to time but Rubinson replied immediately with the best goal of the match. His 40 yard free kick went straight to the top of the net,- giving-goalkeeper Price no

chance. King’s Arms: O’Neill, Penman,

CHATBURN RUN RIOT

Chatburn Res.-9," Transport 5.

A FINE hat-trick by Young laid the foundations of Chatburn Reserves’ first victory in the Ribble Valley Football League’s second division.

Tomlinson gave the villagers a

good start by scoring in the opening minute. Then came the hat-trick, scored within the space of 15 minutes. Pratt increased Chatburn’s lead and Wilkinson added two to give them h 7-2 lead at half time.

Tomlinson added another but then

the‘ home side sat back and conceded three goals through sloppy defensive work. Scott, who had an outstanding game, scored Chatburn’s ninth in the dying minutes.

KEIGHLEY ROBS

HENTHORN West Bradford 4

Henthorn Utd Res 3

ROCKED by a two-goal blast midway through the first half, West Bradford recovered to win this Ribble Valley League second divi sion game by the odd goal in seven.

Henthorn took a surprise first-

minute, lead when Green put a low shot past Peek deputising for Ware- ing in goal. West Bradford were soon level when Hargreaves took advantage of slack marking to put home a good goat. The home side began to take command until goals from Green and Bush sent them -reeling.

A goal by Hargreaves, from the penalty spot after Bush had handled,

i saw West Bradford on the road to recovery. They were still trailing at half time, however, Horsfield having had a goal disallowed and Hargreaves and Keighley both going close.

West Bradford continued to

attack after the restart, Hargreaves completing his hat-trick with a bril liant header. Henthorn should have regained their- lead when a fierce shot was parried and Conti just missed the rebound. After a few more scares, Keighley scored the . winner, knocking home a good ball from Horsfield.

Keighley, D. Bristol and W.

Mellin were best for West Bradford and M. Bristol had a fine first game at centre-forward. Outstanding performances for a Henthorn team deprived of a point, they deserved came from Bush, Green and Conti.

Waggon go top

Waggon and Horses 4, Holden and Hartley 0.

'

MAGNIFICENT Waggon and Horses gained their fifth successive victory, at the expense of Burnley' Sunday League division one champ

ions Holden and Hartley. The Waggon are now top of the

league and on present form wilt take some beating. Ten of the team also

play for Waddirigton’s first or reserve sides on Saturdays. Malcolm

Robinson has added experience to the defence while Simon Whiteside has provided punch in the forward line. Midfield man Ken Ward — something of an outsider as he also plays for King’s Arms — makes the Vhole team tick while McAlly and Q.

. Walker never stop working. Sunday’s goals came from Rick

Waddington (2), Simon Whiteside, and substitute Roger Walker. Even a penalty miss by Ken Ward could not dampen Waggon’s enthusiasm and it is surprising they did not win by a greater margin. The only mystery is why the substitute replaced two-goal hero Waddington in the second half. Waggon and Horses: Under

wood, Humphreys, Richards, Robin son, N. Whiteside, Ward, McAlly, Bishop, G. Walker, S. Whiteside, Waddington. Sub: It. Walker.

• Excitement

C L I TH E R O E Dolphins notched up their fifth win of the season by beating Roseg- rove by 17 points to 15 on

Friday night. It was an exciting gala and

. the final result hung on the last couple.of races. The club is appealing for more parental support at tomorrow night’s

. gala at- the Ribblesdale Pool when the Dolphins meet Preston and hopefully come away with their sixth victory.
