BOB PEEL GRABS BOTH POINTS

■ Chatburn 0, King's Arms 1.

ONCE again these old rivals provided a very tense game and, as so of ten is the case, one goal was the only difference between them. Both sides made good

Chatburn pressed hard and

chances. Dobson was unlucky when he stubbed the ground with only the keeper to beat

and Bob Peel hit the post with a cracking shot. But with Chatburn’s Keith

Hargreaves and Fred Smalley and King’s Alan Scott and Ray Taylor playing well at the h e a rt of their respective defences, there were no goals by half time. The pattern of play was

very similar after the inter val, but in the 70th minute Bob Peel slipped away from the defence to score a good goal from 15 yards out.

Uillington 1, RSSC 2.

BILLINGTON came close to gaining their first point of the season on Saturday when they were in contention right up to the closing stages. But a late goal from Brad

attack and Duckworth put them into the lead from a corner. This was shortlived, however, and a defensive error gave Bradley the change to equalise. Both sides missed several

ley ended their hopes and they still have nothing to show from their 17 league games. Billington were soon on the

good openings in an evenly- contested second half, but after 80 minutes Bradley gave KSSC the points with a pow erful shot.

In swim team, C LITH ERO E Grammar School pupils Jill Knowles and Ruth McDowell are to repre sent North Lancashire in the Northern Counties festival of swimming competition at Blackpool at the end of May. The girls, both from Great

Harwood, qualified for the festival in the North Lanca shire Age Groups competition

at Fleetwood Jill won the 14-year-old girls 100m butterfly and Ruth, also 14, was second in the 100m breast stroke. The Fleetwood competition

was the first of a series of six run by the North Lancashire Swimming and Water Polo Association. The second will be held a t ’ Lancaster on Saturday.

HENTHORN HIT FOR SIX

Clilhcroc Ac. G. Henlhorn I’ld I.

A HAT-TRICK by Peter Bel ton saw Clitheroe Academi cals to a decisive win over a Henthorn side that neverthe less refused to' surrender without a struggle. Both teams played good

football in the first 15 minutes but the home side deservedly took tlie lead when Belton ran on to a through ball from Dil- w o r th . The la t te r also engineered the second goal when a quick free kick found Glen Wright, who scored well. Belton created the third

goal which was well put away by Dilworth. Henthorn tried to fight back but were unable to open their account before the interval. The restart found Wright,

Dilworth and Blacktop con tro ll in g the midfield for Academicals. Belton scored two more to complete his hat- trick and Hesketh added a sixth. Trying hard in the last 15 minutes, Henthorn almost

scored on several occasions before a home team player scored an own goal. The only black mark was the sending off of Dilworth for a foul. Academicals: Fielding, Murphy,

Backer, Foster, Rudd, Blacktop, Wright, Barcroft, Dilworth, Belton, HCsketh. Sub: Boardman. Henthorn: Hall, Greatorex, D.

Conti, Wild, Isherwood, Har greaves, Peel, Bishop, Stewart, S. Conti. Sutcliffe.

Cub Scouts

IN the two matches played in the Clitheroe and District Cub Scout League on Saturday, Trinity Tigers won 4-1 at Chatburn and St Mary’s had a 4-2 home v ic to ry over Gisburn.

On Saturday the District A

and .B teams will play South Ribble at St Mary’s School, Leyland. Transport leaves SS Michael and John’s School, Clitheroe, at 9-15 a.m,

Chatburn have a friendly

against Gisburn on the same day.' -

King’s keeper O’Neill had to be carried off after colliding with Dobson. Robinson took over in goal, but Chatburn could only manage to get in each other’s way and missed a couple of good chances.

On Saturday these teams

meet again in the Aitken Shield in what will surely be another good close contest. Chatburn: Johnson, Holgate,

Ratlin, Read, Hargreaves, Smalley, Speak, Graham, Dobson (A), Dins- tlale, Slinger. Sub: Dobson (T). King’s Arms: O’Neill, Robinson, Penman, Ray Taylor, Scolt, Peel (J), Pyc. Johnson, Rod Taylor, Rush, Peel (It). Sub: Woodworth.

This puts them ri^ht up with the second division •leaders and if they can turn

their games in hand into points they will be favourites for promotion at the first attempt. ■

Both teams set off at a

cracking pace, entertaining the large crowd with open end-to-end football. Charnley and Holland went close for the home team and Towne was unlucky for Read. After Wood had a goal dis

allowed, Newby put Read ahead from the penalty spot after a defender had handled. The pub side, however, had

no difficulty in hitting back and 15 minutes before the interval Ian Astley hammered the ball through a ruck of players after the keeper drop ped a fierce shot. •Five minutes later Holland

ran on to a good through ball and placed a fine shot under neath the oncoming keeper to give Spring Mill the lead. The pace didn’t slacken

after the interval with all the players fighting for every ball. Kinney hit the bar for Spring Mill and Newby was foiled only by a good save from Green. The home side went further

ahead through Astley, who scored from the penalty spot following a foul by Stubbs on Holland. Road tried hard to come

back into the game and, with 10 minutes to go, Newby scored his second goal to put the villagers in with a chance. But both defences held firm and Spring Mill ran out worthy winners. Spring Mill: Green, Ingham, Kid

die, Astlcy (I), Astley (S), Howard, Holland, Charnley, Wood, Fox, Kin ney. Sub: Atkinson. Read: Worslcy, Holt, Bell (I),

Stubbs, Bell (R), Grainger, Kitchen, Pearce, Newby, Towne, Goodway. Sub: Bell (G).

Hurst Green snatch

chances

Hurst Green Res 2, lirockhull (I.

HURST GREEN notched up their third win of the season in a hard but cleanly-fought match.

The villager’s success was

due to their much-improved defence and a forward, line which managed to convert two of th e s e v e ra l chances created. Brockhall’s challenge failed

in front of goal after good approach work. One reason for the hospital side’s lack of success was the good goal keeping of Hayhurst and the tireless and intelligent play of centre-half Holden and left back Rogerson. Both sides had struggled to

field a team and Hurst Green brought in Greenhalgh for his first game since tearing a calf

muscle- But after 15 minutes play he had to go off following a bad tackle. The first half was an even

affair, but the home team, with the slope advantage, were less effective than in the second period. Drivel’, however, opened

the scoring with a beautifully- taken goal, breaking through to control a long ball to beat Yee with ease. Brockhall, with Parkinson,

Metcalfe and Smithson out standing, caused the home d e f e n c e some an x io u s moments, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Hurst Green dominated the

game for much of the second half and John Eccles laid on several good openings only to see the final shot struck wide or straight at the keeper. Just when it seemed that

the solitary goal would decide the game, Ellei handled just outside the area and John Eccles hit a fierce kick into the top , corner. Hurst Green Reserves: Hayhurst,

Blockheel, Rogerson, Young, Hol den, Garter, Eccles (R), Eccles (J), Greenhalgh, Glenn, Driver. Sub: Taylforth. Brockhall: Yee, Anderton, Bag-

show, Heseltinc, Ellel, Hall, Ben-' nett, Metcalfe, Price, Parkinson, Smithson.

Michael’s great run

COMPETING against more than 700 runners, young ath le te Michael Morton, of Queens way, Waddington, came a creditable seventh in the most important race of his career so far. Michael (15), a pupil of

Riversmead School, was tak ing part, in the youths’ race at the national cross-country championships, held in Leices ter at the weekend. Entries, from all over England, total led 730 and it was the biggest race that Michael had taken part in. Local athletes also ran up a

number of successes in the Rossendale Shield races at Marl Pitts, Rawtenstall, on Saturday. Trudy Kemvard was 22nd in the girls’ race and Susan Bush fifth in the inter mediates. In the junior sec tion, Kathryn Stansfield was eighth and Michfelle Wrathall ninth.

in such illustrious company it was only good enough to put him fourth. Pendle Junior School pupil

Sarah Read (10) swam very well to be first home in the 100-yard breast stroke but unfortunately she was dis qualified for a wrong leg kick. Also from Pendle Junior,

Andrew Nicholas (10) scored the highest finish of the Clitheroe entrants when he finished second in the boys’ 100-yard breast stroke. Susan Rowland (10), ’a pupil

at St Augustine’s, Billington, was third in the girls’ 100-yard backstroke. Two other members —

Katherine Pym (12), and John Broughton (14) — turned in cred i tab le performances although unplaced. •

Derbyshire shows the way

Ribblc Valley 6, Lancaster and Morccambc 5

A GOAL in extra time from Ribblesdale School pupil Croft gave the local schoolboys a semi-final tie against Hynd-. burn in the Rennell Cup for under 14s. Ribble Valley were trailing

by four goals at one stage in this q u a rte r-f in a l replay before Derbyshire stamped his authority on the game. He pulled one back just before the interval and, after he had been brought down in the area, Burgess made it 2-4. Derbyshire went on to score

a further three goals to put his side in the lead, but minutes before the final whistle the visitors equalised. Ribble Valley dominated

the 20 minutes of extra time and should have scored more than the one goal from Croft.

Nelson 0, Clitheroc 0. s stands firm

CLITHEROE again displayed their much-improved away form, taking the game to Nelson on a ground at which two Premier League clubs have already come to grief this season.

The match opened with

Clitheroe on the defensive and Dave Crump had to look lively to stop McCrae as he went through for an early shot.

The Clitheroe midfield was

in excellent form, Glenn Wright and Tony Eyles being the architects of many raids.

Paul McGuire, back in the

side after injury, added the extra bite at the centre of the defence and Nelson found it a - very difficult task to force their way through.

After Geoff Payton fluffed

an easy chance, shooting weakly at the keeper, he made amends with a lovely run down the left flank. His hard, low cross deceived the keeper, bu t it also skidded past Graham Bisby, running in at the far post.

As play switched from end

to end, Tommy Beard and Crump had to be on their best form to,stop the Nelson front three.

The only blot on the opening

again came strong with the midfield clicking into action. McGuire rode three tackles before pushing the ball out to Bisby, who forced a cornel’. From the resulting kick, Crump was only inches wide with a fine header. A Wright attack brought

with isolated Nelson raids causing the defence little trou ble. Bob Addison, playing against his old club, was par ticularly prominent. The final whistle came with Clitheroe on the attack and fully deserv ing a draw. This was an excellent result

more trouble for Nelson, and the Clitheroe team made a loud and confident appeal for a penalty when Hodgkinson appeared to handle in the box. It was nearly all Clitheroe

and a real platform on which to build. The only real fault was the lack of penetration up front. t ’lllheroc: Houldsivortli, Beard,

Crump, Gillibrand, Addison. Wright, McGuire. Kyles, Bisby, Orreii, Payton. Hub: Monks.

half hour was the booking of David Gillibrand for a foul on Isherwood — a decision consi dered harsh by Clitheroe man ager Jimmy Birkett. After the break Clitheroe

Waddington bounce back

Waddington 6, Blackburn YMCA A 1.

AFTER a recent slump which brought only one point from two games, Waddington bounced back into form on S a t u r d a y to d e s t ro y relegation-threatened YMCA. John Ainsworth was the

"executioner-in-chief" scoring a magnificent first half hat- trick to put the villagers firmly in control. His first goal after 25 minutes was a brilliant solo effort and his second,- on the half hour, was the best seen at Waddington' for some time. Walker and Foreshaw linked

up well from the half-way line before the latter’s hard and low cross was pushed home by Ainsworth. His third goal came on the stroke of half time after a shot by Ross had been cleared, off the line. If the first half belonged to

Ainsworth then the second period was surely Graham Walker's. He rescued his side from the complacency which led to YMCA pulling one back a fte r 50 minutes with two well-taken goals.

His excellent form coin

cided with the substitution of Sims for John Waddington and Robinson’s move into the middle of the field. Walker scored Wadding-

ton's fourth goal after 05 minutes with a clever shot from a tight situation. After John Nultall converted a pen alty, Walker completed the scoring, pouncing on a mis take by the keeper. Waddington: Grainger, Bialecki,

Richards, Robinson, Nultall, Ilink- sman, Waddington (-J), Foreshaw, Walker, Ainsworth, Ross Sub; Sims.

MARTIN

USES HIS HEAD

Blackburn YMCA C I, Waddington Reserves 5

WADDINGTON Reserves kept up their promotion hopes on Saturday

with a well-earned victory at Mcllor. A hat-trick of headers from Mar

tin Dawson and two goals from John Behan secured the points for the villagers in this easy game. They soon settled down on the

small bumpy pitch and were a goal up after 10 minutes when Behan prodded the ball home from close range. Minutes later Whiteside laid on a good cross for Dawson’s first goal and from this point Waddington controlled the game. Just before the interval they went’

further ahead when Dawson rose well above the opposition to head homo a fine centre from Har greaves. The second half was similar to the

first and, despite kicking into a strong wind, the villagers played some neat football. After 65 minutes another cross

into the game, using the wind to their advantage. But Boyd and Car ter were in commanding form at the centre of the defence and gave them little change. YMCA's only goal came from the

penalty spot. This put new life into the home side, but they were unable to beat Underwood in goal, who made several good saves.

. With only minutes to go Linford came on for Nigel Whiteside and produced the opening to enable Behan to score his second goal from close range. Waddington Reserves: Under

wood, Hargreaves, Carter, Boyd, Wright, Lund, R. Waddington, N. W h ite s id e , Behan, Dawson, . Kenyon. JSub: Ljnford.
