Council fights ‘poaching’ by new town
A PROTEST at the alleged "poaching - of industry and population from NE Lancashire by the Central Lancashire New Town is to be lodged by the Ribble Valley Council.
The matter was brought to
the attention of the council this week by Coun. Bill Flem ing (Billmgton) who explained that £900 million has been allo cated by the Government for the new town development. "This means that the develop ment corporation can and has already built factories which it is offering to industries. - he said. "Several companies from

NE Lancs are considering a move there and one firm from an area neighbouring our own has already said it will do so.’ The new town project was
originally envisaged as pro viding for the overspill from Manchester, said Coun. Flem ing. "The new town has pro- ceded as planned. ” he said, "but the overspill of popula tion and industry has not. So the only way to gain the firms and people is by taking them from the surrounding dis tricts.- Because of grants and the
availability not just of sites but of completed factories in the new town area, there is plenty of incentive for firms to move, said Coun. Fleming. "All the surrounding districts have suddenly become aware of the very serious situation that is now staring them in the face." The Ribble Valley Council
did not accept the Central Lancashire New Town plan in the first place, he said. "I ask that we tell the NE Lancs Development Association that if the new town plan goes ahead in its present form it will do nothing but damage to the prospects of the surround ing areas. We should strongly oppose the new town m its present concept." Coun. Fleming was sup
ported by Coun. Fred Green (Wilpshire). who said that there had been outspoken criticism of the plan from all parts of NE Lancashire. "This sort of poaching should be kil led as soon as possible, he said, "it can do nothing but harm to our own areas.
