School’s Christmas party had a treat for Father Christmas when he called to see them—they sang a selection of carols especially for him. Father Christmas showed

his appreciation by handing a. present to each child afterwards. The party, for all depart

ments of the Sunday School from toddlers to teenagers, was organised by the teach ers and the Minister, the Rev. Jeffrey Butcher. There were plenty of

canics, of course, and the party tea consisted of potato

replies to atrocity petition

MEMBERS of St James's Parish Church who raised a petition protesting against the persecution of Christians in an African republic have lieen tola that the British Government, can take no official action. The 104-signature petition

w.as sent to Foreign Secre tary Jmnes Callaghan after the curate at St James's, the Rev. John Taylor, brought atrocities in the Central African Republic of Chad to the notice of his Sunday congregations. In a reply on behalf of the

Foreign Office, Mr D. W. R. Lewis, of the West African Department, told the pari shioners that he understood their feelings and those of other members of the public who had written in the same vein. The Department had also

received reports about the arrest of Swiss missionaries In the country, and it was not known whether they were still detained. One British missionary

had 'been detained on the orders of the pagan Presi

dent Tombalba.ve of Chad,

, " Although we deplore | these events, and particu- | larly the'brutal t reatment of : African Christians in Chad,

but it was understood that he had since been released, wrote Mr Lewis.

i I am afraid that, since nu British subjects arc involved Her Majesty's Government cannot take olli.’ ia’ action over what is an interna matter o! another cour.t’.'v." he added.

-s- h , , \\

■ We are, however, con

sidering whether there is anything we can do in an indirect way to try to alle viate the situation.

■ " It may be possible, for example, through our in formal contacts with other African governments, to draw their attention to the strong- feelings which have been aroused in Britain, and they, in turn, may be able to exert some pressure on the Cha'dian Government.”

Mr Lewis suggested that

some influence might also be brought to bear by such bodies as Uie World Council of Churches.

Members of St James's

weekly prayer meeting, who formulated the protest letter

with Mr Taylor, are now considering whether to ap proach the World Council of Churches to enlist its aid.

" The reply to our petition

was much more sympathetic than we had expected, and we haven't, given up hope of a happy outcome,'' said Mr Taylor this week..

Clitheroc Division MP Mr

David Walder—to whom a copy of the petition was also sent—has said that he will arid his own words to the arguments of the pari

shioners.
