Waddington step up

promotion challenge

WADDINGTON arc putting in a fantastic promotion bid in the Blackburn Combina tion Second Division. They have won their last six league games and are un beaten for seven.

Away -to Walpamtir they

won 3-2 with goals from Slinger, Carter and Stod- dart. At Feniscowles they romped home 8-2. Carter scoring four and the others' coming from Behan, Walker, Stoddart and Slinger.

The hardest task to date

was away to Catholic YC. Defeat for either would

probably end their promo

tion chances. At half-time Waddington trailed 2-0, and but for good goalkeeping by recent signing Derek Whit taker would have been furtiier behind.

bundled the ball over the line in a scramble for Wad- dington's winner.

They now need three,

points from their last two games, starting at Brockhall. A win for Brockhall will promote them, a. draw means Wadding-ton must then beat Haslingden St Mary's, and i f the villagers

win they will need just a point. For tlie second successive

year Calrierstones are Cot ton Cup runners-up. in the final against Stamford United they lost, a thrilling game by 4-3. Last season they lost 3-1 to Lower Chapel.

In Division Three, Calder-

stones are just above, half way after losing 3-2 to

Pleasington.

BILL INC, TON Band Club added net another win to this season’s successes when two 0/ their players won the Clitheroe and district darts league knock-out doubles competition.

the occasion to present the league champions and run. vers-up with their trophies. They were Billington Band

THE championship hopes of Royal Oak died when they lost 4-2 to a much-improved

Billington side. Billington took the lead

through Wilson, who was completely unmarked and scored with a good header. Ten minutes later, Oak drew level when Hargreaves ran 20 yards unchallenged and scored from 30 yards — one of Oak's best goals of the season.

A GOAL scored in the last minute gave Grindleton a draw in their Yorkshire “ derby” with Waddington Reserves.

I t was the

Reserves’ first draw of season, and the first for

nearly two years.

MEMBERS of Clitheroe CC probably sensed a ring of familiarity when the side was put out for 123 in the last over on Saturday. In deed, when they played Colne in a nracticc match the week before Clitheroe were all out for 123—in the last over!

Run-outs rob Clitheroe

HOW to throw away a cricket match was demon- trated at Chatburn Road, where Clitheroc lost to Cherry Tree by a solitary run. Clitheroc needed two runs,

with three balls of the final extra over remaining, lo overtake the visitors’ 124. Keith Boden hit out and knew at once there was no chance of a run, -but last- man Garth Sutcliffe fool ishly darted out e.f his crease and was easily run out;. It was a pity, because

after an opening stand of 55 by Cherry Tree's Ken nedy and Flatley, the Clitheroe attack dismissed the opposition efficiently, Bo'dcn, Simon Wcstliead and new pro Peter Lane each taking three wickets. C a r e fu l batting by

Graham Davies, Mick Yates, Robert Stevenson and Colin Bacon forced Clitheroe into a strong position, and they looked sure of four points until Bacon, Ken Barnes and Sutcliffe were all run out in adding one to the

score. Cherry Tree: 124. Bowling: Lane 15.5—2—M —3 K.
