motorists crossing Castle Street from King Lane had. been mentioned by Coun. William Sharpies, who ex pressed the opinion that through traffic was not making enough use of the inner by

pass. The chairman, Coun. James

Barnes, pointed out that full use of the by-pass could not be encouraged until four cot tages near the junction with Waterloo Road had been demolished.

ALTERATIONS When Coun. Blackburn in

quired about the completion date for the by-pass, Mr. J. Newton Bell. Borough Engin eer, said: “We cannot get possession of property we wish to pull down.” When this hap pened, a culvert would have to be rebuilt so that the roadway could be widened. Mr. Bell also said some alter ations were needed at the

Salford junction and when these were done the bulk of the traffic would go along the by.

pass. Mr. John Cowdall. Town

Clerk, gave the committee the latest information he had from the County Council. This was that the owner was still living in one of the houses and he was not willing to move until he got his money from the County. However, the County had

written to the man’s solicitors and a deed of conveyance was being drawn up. Demolition would begin immediately pos session was granted.

WHITE LINES After reference had been

made to probable improve ments to the junction with the main road at Salford, the Town Clerk was asked if any objections had been raised to the 30 mph speed limit on the by-pass. He replied that there was

provision for people to object or make observations, and Clitheroe Trades Council had suggested the use of “cat’s eyes” or white lines to stop motorists overtaking: also controlled pedestrian crossings at 'Waterloo, Shawbridge and Highfield Road. The Town Council, he added,

had asked for a pedestrian crossing at Shawbridge junc tion.

Coun. Wallace Hargreaves

thought these decisions ought to he left to the County Coun cil. and Coun. Ronnie Todd referring to a road safety con ference he had attended, said convincing evidence had been given that in many instances nedestrian crossings were often the cause of accidents. Coun. Barnes: “It- is said

that 75 per cent of accidents on the continent are caused by zebra crossings.” However, he considered the council had done the right thing in asking for a pedestrian crossing at the Shawbridge junction.

NATIONAL POLICY Coun. Leo Wells thought

that all crossings should be controlled but there ought not to be too many of them be cause they held up traffic flow. When Aid Clifford Chatham

mentioned the staggered junc tion at Shawbridge and de clared that all such ■ junctions were dangerous, Mr. Bell com mented: “Staggered junctions are national policy.” Firms whose heavy vehicles

use Pimlico Road are to he asked to draw drivers’ attention to a footpath improvement

which has marginally nar rowed the width of the road a short distance beyond Fox Street. Replying to a question in committee, Mr. Bell said the
