Clitheroe hit by more injuries at

Clitheroe played their last away game of the season

yesterday week when they visited Blackpool Mechanics, and though they lost 1—2, the result was not a true reflec tion of the play.

TWOGAMES IN TWO DAYS NEXT WEEK

jl| Clitheroe face two games in two days next

]|| week when they play Ley- land Motors on Tuesday and Nelson on Thursday. Both matches will take place at Shaw Bridge. Though they will be field

ing a .team with ' several reserves, Clitheroe should be able to gain full points from both matches. Clitheroe have met both

teams earlier this season. They travelled to Leyland twice, losing 1—2 in the league - match, but winning 5—2 in the Lancashire Junior Cup. When they-went to Nelson

in October, they managed to -force a 1—1 draw, when Wilf Holt scored from the penalty spot. Bernard Kay will probably

cluded four reserves, Clith eroe seemed to be in with a good chance of gaining at least a point when they were level 1—1 at the interval, but a goal 10 minutes from time ended all their hopes. It was a much brighter display by the Clitheroe

players. They showed 100 per cent, team spirit, with their hard grafting and keenness to work for the ball. They were hampered, how

ever, when Keith Reilly, who was having a fine debut at right half, was taken to hos pital during the first half, for stitches to be inserted into a deep cut above his eye. Another hard worker for Clitheroe, Larry Shaw, was also slowed down after re ceiving an injury to a tendon. It is unlikely that Shaw,

who finished the game limp ing heavily, will play again this season, and it is a fact that he will bo missed for his enthusiastic approach to his duties has been a feature of recent matches. The first half was very one

sided, with Clitheroe on the offensive for long periods. In fact, Burch, in the visitors’ goal, did not touch the ball for the first 15 minutes. All the Clitheroe forwards

be looking forward to the Leyland match, for it was in the cup clash there, that he hit a hat-trick, all his goals coming in a 10-minute spell. Bernard Wallbank hit the other two. one from the spot. Lining up against Clitheroe

had chances to give their side the lead, but each one shot wide or straight at the goal keeper. One of the best openings

on Thursday, will.be former Shaw Bridge . goalkeeper-, young John Schofield, who was transferred to Nelson just before Christmas.’ Schofield had played, hi

fell to Wayne Harvie, who was making a return to the side following injury, when he was put through by Wall- bank, but he shot into the side-netting. Blackpool took the lead mid

eight league games for Clitheroe before he went to Nelson. He was displaced in goals by Mick O’Neil, after a ■bad spell which saw him let through six goals in two games. Altogether, he made 5G

appearances for Clitheroe, and missed only one league

game last season. Clitheroe’s record at home

to Nelson has not been a very convincing one since the war, and they lost the last two meetings at Shaw Bridge in 1965-66 and 1964-65 by 0—2 and 2—3 respectively. Their results at home to

Leyland have, however, been much different. Clitheroe

conceding a goal, and of the last eight meetings, Clitheroe have won sax and drawn one.

Depleted team shows can still get results

Clitheroe gained their

first win in four games when they defeated Black pool Mechanics 3— 1 at home.on Saturday, but the ■ victory was more clear-cut than the score suggests.

Clitheroe had several chances to score, but as each one was • scorned, it began to look as if another goalless draw was inevitable. Then, however, Bernard '

During the first 15 minutes,

Kay struck and the Clitheroe forward line - began to move with some purpose, creating more opportunities than it had done in any of the prev- ous three games. , Blackpool held off at first,

but once Clitheroe showed they meant business, the visi tor’s defence cracked under the pressure and surrendered all initiative. , The result should do the

club a lot of good. After the shock sackings and suspen sion involving four players, Clitheroe needed to show the public that they could still get results even with a depleted team, and this game did just that. Stuart Burch kept his place

time, and it was a pity it could not have kept its score- sheet clean. Blackpool would not have scored had Burch not raced

’ out to the edge of his area and tripped Thompson, thus giving away a penalty. Though he dived the right way, Burch was beaten by Gleave’s spot-kick. Mention must be made of
