fes. W S S tW gSSg*3» £• sional, Billy Slinger. were the outstanding features of

the weekend s Ribblesdale League matches As a result o f their six-

wicket win over Whalley, Ribblesdale Wanderers went to the top of the league table, a point ahead of Great Harwood and Padi- ham, both of whom also won their matches.

Clitheroe, who were pre

viously unbeaten in the league, slipped up at Read, and. after the home side declared at 142-9, Clitheroe were all out 15 runs short of victor}’.

One of the Ramsbottom

Cup second round matches was played on Sunday, and

. jt turned out as a disaster for Ribblesdale Wanderers, who were beaten at home by lowly Baxenden.

Batting first, the Wan

derers were out for 30, and the visitors passed that total without loss.

EXCITING EIGHT

TO THE FINISH In a closely fought game which was’ always interesting,

and at times, exciting, Read defeated Clitheroe by 14

runs, declaring at 142-9 and then dismissing the visitors for 128. Read won the toss and

elected to bat on a soft wicket, which gave little assistance to the bowlers. ■ Openers Fairclough and M.

Grainger found runs difficult to obtain on a slow pitch and were just getting into their stride when Grainger was caught off Entwistle for 19. Shortly afterwards, Fair clough was caught behind and tills brought Goodway and Seddon together. After Goodway’s departure

to a well-taken catch by Blackburn, Seddon drove two fours, off Entwistle to bring the score to 70, but when Clayton returned, he had the Read professional out l.b.w. The. later batsmen provided

some entertaining cricket. Haworth and P. Grainger in •particular, showing that runs could be obtained by attack ing the bowling. When Grainger was run

out for 32 after a merry knock, including a six to the tea-room boundary, the Read innings was declared at 112— 9.

Realising that they had ■_

ample time in which to make the necessary runs, Clitheroe : made a sound start against some steady bowling by Sed don and Wilkinson. W h e n Washbrook was

bowled bv Wilkinson having scored 13. the breakthrough was made and he was soon followed by Fletcher and '"’ esthead, again victims of ’kinson.

by Fairclough off Seddon, that the issue was decided in the first of the extra five overs. Seddon finished with 4—31

and Duerden and Wilkinson had 3—29 and 3—35 respec tively. Davies was the anchor man o f the Clitheroe innings, scoring 24. Both teams fielded well and

are to be congratulated on providing the spectators with some keenly contested and sporting cricket.

ROTHMAN CUP HOPES DASHED

Ribblesdale League’ s

team faded in its attempt to reach the second round o f the Rothman Cup com petition when it was beaten by the North War wickshire League on Sun

day. It was unfortunate that the

Ribblesdale League did not win, as their second round tie against the Central Lanca shire League, which would have been played at the Chat- bum Road ground, Clitheroe, would have brought one of the biggest cricketing crowds for many years to the town. Clitheroe Cricket Club, on

whose ground the tie would have been played, was ail set to cater for at least 400 spec

tators. Batting first, the North

Warwickshire League star ted well, with lively scores of 47 and 70 from R. Sewell and J. Warrington respectively. By the time their 45 overs

were up, the home side had reached the formidable total of 165-7, with R. Walton, the Barnoidswick professional; being the most, successful Ribblesdale bowler, taking 4-25. The Ribblesdale League side did not despair,' and

local openers, Geoff Ireland, of Whalley, and Graham Davies, of Clitheroe, got them off to a good start. Davies was run out after

scoring only three, but Ire land went on to make 21, while third man in, Eric Mitchell, of Settle, hit a splen did 38. Clitheroe professional, Jim

Clayton, made a useful 15 not out, but the only other bats man to reach double figures was S. Gee, of Padiham, who scored 10 before being run out. The Ribblesdale League’s

innings was eventually con cluded after the 45 overs, with their score at 112-9, thus giv ing their opponents a passage into the next round.

odd experience

“ I have never been in a Wanderers side that has failed to score'40 runs. It was a very odd expCTience ,

in in-

mented Ribblesdale Wanderers’ skipper, Keith weaver, after" his side’s 10-wcket defeat at the hands of Baxenaen their Ramsbottom Cup second round game on oun av. For many spectators it was

also a humbling experience, a® the Wanderers had confi dently disposed of Whalley the previous day, and were expected to deal with any challenge that Baxenden could raise. This was not to be, how

ever, and the home side fell victim to the state of its own

pitch and the devastating bowling of Tommy Barnes, Even though they were

^Without the services of Billy •SUnger — who would have

'been ineligible anyway—and Tony Holden, who were both playing for the League side, tlie Wanderers’ defeat came as quite a shock. The Baxenden skipper, see

ing how the rain had affected the wicket,- put the Wander ers in .to bat, and from that point nothing went right for

the home side. Wickets soon feU, and by

the time they had reached 21. Keith Weaver, Ken Prbctc: and BUI Colley had all bee: sent back to the pavilion. Four more runs were added before Tom Wallbank was

caught by Hurlestone off Barnes for 11, but when he left, the home side’s batting strength crumbled and th< last six batsmen scored only live runs between them. ■ Barnes and N. Gulsliaw

shared the 10 wickets equally and finished with 5—10 and 5—18 respectively. Barnes bowled nine overs,

and his figures at the end of his first six, were one wicket for seven runs. He went on to -■"pture four wickets for three nits in his next three overs.

which included one wicket maiden.

With the Wanderer* au out „ .. ,

for 30. Baxenden’s skipper told his opening pair to hit o u t . at every hall, and this they did scoring the required 32 runs in just over six

overs. Ribblesdale Wanderers

SLINGER TAKES

EIGHT WICKETS Following a disastrous start to their match against

.Ribblesdale Wanderers at Church Meadow on Saturday, Whalley recovered and reached quite a respectable total, .but the Wanderers secured victory with six wickets to

Jor hard-hitting were both back in the pavilion by the time the score had reached seven, and D. Bleazavd joined them four inns later. A stand of 11 was made by

p. Shuttleworth and Jim Peters but "this was broken up by’ Slinger, who was en- joving a most successful day, haring captured the first three wickets.

Club the League president, Mr. J. Y. Lofthouse, presented the Ortne Shield to the new champions and the runners-up shield to Billington ‘A’.

game on Monday, Read fought hard but were, eventually all out 30 runs short of their target.

The g am e had b e e n

threatened by the weather, ta t It got under way with Padiham’s R. A. Devon and R. E. Stevenson facing tire

Read attack. The tame side b a t t e d

steadily and good innings of 47 by A. E. Stevenson, 30 by Halsall and 29 by M. Green halgh, allowed them to declare at the respectable total of

145-7. David Seddon, their profes

sional, was Read's most suc cessful bowler- taking 5-54, with E. Sumner capturing the other two wickets for 48 runs.

Peter Fairclough, Read’s

opening batsman, w-as the highest s c o r o r for tire villagers in their innings, but a devastating bowling spell by Padiham’s professional N. Halsall. accounted tor four early Read wickets at a cost

of only 11 runs. Halsall w’ent on to finish

with 4-40. while. K. Coward and M. Greenhalgh shared

the remaining six wickets. Apart from a show of

spirit by Read’s middle-bats men P. Grainger arid M.

Georgeson. who scored 22 and 20 not out respectively,

there was little else to en thuse about from the batting point of view.
