My stylist strongly resents the fact that I don’t allow him a weekly appointment to run his skills through my locks, but actually do it myself.
Most of all, he resents me with my hair LONG. Now that cleanliness and shine are my two main criteria and I ’m able to ensure them both by regular care at home, I simply don’t see the need for elaborate rol- lertog, stiffeners and huge cavernous dryers, which send me out looking and feeling rather like a boiled lobster.
He knows, and I do too, that to cutting he’s todispen- sible, and it’s only by rea son of his knowing his skill so well, that I ’m able to make my calls so infre quently.
The main determining factor to the hairdresser-client relations will always be length.

usually needs. The longer it is, the more you’re con fined to wearing it loose, s im p l e and glossy, or scraped back and sophisti cated.
The wig trade has started to change all this, however,
and many more women are starting to try and get the best of both worlds: short hairdo for general working life and longish wig for wear on special occasions.
And, incidentally, back comes the need for your stylist even more than before. Most wigs whether they’re long or short, need expert dressing to look really effec tive.
Sleek
Ham-handed treatment at home can ruin your glamor ous top knot. Though if you feel REALLY confident, a continent-based firm has brought out a wig cleansing fluid and a set-spray, both to aerosol form.
Fashions in hairdos are always a subject of dispute: some say they always wear what suits them. Others claim that they feel old- fashioned if they’re long when others are short, and vice-versa.
For the latter, the news is now—short and sleek. One main Parisian hairdresser, who launched his new look at
the.recent couture shows, calls i t . his “Apple” look, sometimes with centre part ing, worn , with, net fringe

or side sweep across the forehead and flat and glossy at back and sides.
It can of course prove cruel to a face that's not even- featured, and utterly de mands a very high class of make-up. But for round y o u n g English rosebud faces, it might prove quite popular.
Both demanded an incredible amount of dressing—not to mention a special frizz perm for the former, which the hairdressers are now having a most lucrative time In straightening out again.
The do-it-yourself hair pro ducts on the other hand, are more numerous and more expert than they’ve ever been.
The frizzy freakout styles, thank goodness, have had their day. So have the lon ger, curlier styles that Paris produced last year.
And whatever my stylist says, he must admit, that with the minimum of artistic skill, I can dye, de-dand- ruff. condition, set and even tone up my hair at home.
One process I ’ve never tried to date, is to add any glints or highlights. But even this process has been simplified and honed down for use to domestic bathrooms — at a cost of only a few shillings, compared to up to 10 guin eas to a top hair-dressing
salon. Easier
All you need is a home hair- lightening kit, a nylon tall comb, a polythene bag and a piece of sponge.
You first place the polythene bag over your hair, tuck up the hair inside, fold down the corners and excess poly thene then stick with tape to make a sort of skull cap.
Using a bent hair pin or crochet hook, you then make pin size holes in the cap about half an Inch or more apart and pull a few hairs through each hole. (Keep the strands rather narrow or you’ll finish up looking zebra-striped).
From there on the process is usually easier to follow from the packet of the lightener used.
There will always be (a) the unskilled who can’t manage to even shampoo their own hair and (b) those who feel the home product still com pares poorly with profes sional expertise.
t& ow t& g
The third, and to me most important factor, is the lure of the hairdressing salon as something of a luxury, or an outing, one of the few places remaining to an age of self-serve where you can actually feel pampered and waited on.
