per cent of the play at Formby on Wednesday even ing, but by a cruel stroke of lluck, they were beaten by the odd goal in seven.

long periods but, thanks to some agile goalkeeping by Mor ton, they were denied any fur ther goals. On the other hand, however,

Clitheroe dictated play for

Formby’s forwards were given at least two of the goals by young John Schofield, who is having a most unhappy start

to the season. Schofield had to have treat

ment on the coach going to the ground to a finger which he injured in Saturday’s match against Rossendale, and he hurt it again when he fell badly as Formby scored their

first goal. Formby's first ?011' came

after seven minutes when Brookman back-headed a lobbed centre past Schofield. Clitheroe could have equalised shortly afterwards, but after Kay had rounded Morton,

Cruel stroke of luck has Clitheroe beaten

Leery raced back and cleared off the line.

Four minutes before the in .

terval. Wallbank, who had been a tireless worker, equalised for Clitheroe with a well-placed glancing header from Wilson 6

corner. Schofield made a good save

at the start of the second half when he raced out and beat Fazackerley and Brookman to

the ball. After 55 minutes Clitheroe _...

scored a second goal which was long overdue when one considers the intense pressure

when he chased a long through ball, rounded Morton, and scored from ^ narrow angle. Unfortunately Kay hurt his leg when scoring the goal, and

they placed on the home goal. Bernard Kay was the scorer

was limping quite, badly. Two minutes later Formby

equalised with a . remarkable goal which should never have been allowed to happen. Scho-

field had to come out almost to the penalty spot and Brook man headed over him and into

the liet. Tw’o more goals in five min

utes from Fazackerly (62 min utes) and Webb (67) gave Formby a commanding lead they did not deserve, but Wall- bank pulled one back after 78 minutes with a glorious

header. Minutes before Clitheroes

third goal, Holden, the subs 11 tute had headed strongly against the bar from a Sagar

corner kick. Teams; Formby: Morton, , .
